What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Mounjaro Cost and Private Access in the UK

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medication available through two main routes in the UK: NHS specialist services or private online prescribing. The cost varies significantly depending on which route you choose.

Private prescription costs: When prescribed privately through a UK-licensed online prescriber, Mounjaro typically costs between £129 and £320 per month depending on your dose. Lower starting doses (2.5 mg and 5 mg) are usually at the lower end of this range, while higher maintenance doses (10 mg, 12.5 mg, 15 mg) cost more. Each KwikPen contains four weekly injections — enough for one month. Some private providers offer packages across multiple months at slightly reduced rates. It's important to note that only GPhC-registered pharmacies can legally dispense Mounjaro, and any legitimate provider will require an online clinical assessment before issuing a prescription.

What's included in the cost: The prescription fee covers the medication only. Your GP may also want to monitor your progress with occasional blood tests or appointments — check with your surgery about any associated costs.

NHS Access vs Private: Which Route is Right for You?

NHS route: Mounjaro is approved by NICE for use within NHS specialist weight management services (tier 3/4). Access requires a GP referral to your local weight management service. This is significantly cheaper than private — you pay only the standard NHS prescription charge (currently £9.65 per item in England, free in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland if eligible). However, NHS availability varies dramatically by region and integrated care board (ICB). Many areas have lengthy waiting lists — often several months to over a year — due to high demand and limited budgets.

Private route: Available immediately without waiting lists. Online assessment typically takes 24–48 hours. You don't need a GP referral or to access NHS services. This suits people who want faster access or live in areas with no NHS provision. The trade-off is cost — you pay full price for each dose. Using our GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help you estimate potential results and costs across different dose levels to compare with your NHS waiting time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How quickly can I get Mounjaro prescribed privately?

Private online prescription typically takes 24–48 hours from your assessment. Once prescribed, your medication dispatches within 1–2 working days. NHS routes involve waiting lists that vary by region — often several months. Private access is significantly faster but costs more per dose.

Does Mounjaro nausea get better with time?

Yes. Most people experience nausea primarily in the first 2–4 weeks and during dose increases. As your body adjusts, nausea usually improves significantly. Taking your injection on an evening and eating smaller, plain meals can help manage symptoms during adjustment periods.

Can I get Mounjaro through my GP without waiting for specialist services?

In most areas, no — standard GPs do not prescribe Mounjaro. NHS access requires referral to a tier 3 specialist weight management service. Private online prescribers (UK-licensed) can issue prescriptions without NHS referral, though they will conduct a clinical assessment first.

What's the difference between Mounjaro and Wegovy in terms of cost?

Both are prescription-only and available through NHS or private routes. Private costs are broadly similar (£129–£320/month). Mounjaro is a dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist; Wegovy (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 agonist only. Clinical trial results show Mounjaro may produce slightly greater average weight loss, but individual results vary significantly.

Are there ways to manage Mounjaro nausea without stopping treatment?

Yes. Practical strategies include eating smaller, frequent meals; avoiding fatty or sugary foods; staying hydrated; taking your injection in the evening; and ginger supplements. Your prescriber may also adjust your dose schedule. Nausea is usually temporary and improves as your body adjusts over 4–6 weeks.
