What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How Mounjaro Pricing Works Across Doses

Mounjaro is prescribed in a stepped dose titration schedule, starting at 2.5 mg and increasing every 4 weeks up to a maximum of 15 mg once weekly. Each increase in dose typically comes with a corresponding price increase. The KwikPen (the pre-filled injection device) contains 4 doses for one month's supply, so you'll order new pens as you progress through your titration.

  • Starting doses (2.5 mg to 5 mg): Lower cost entry point, typically £129–£180 per month
  • Mid-range doses (7.5 mg to 10 mg): Mid-tier pricing, usually £200–£280 per month
  • Maximum doses (12.5 mg to 15 mg): Higher cost, generally £280–£320+ per month

Price increases align with dose escalations, not on arbitrary dates. You'll only pay for the dose you're actually taking. The exact price depends on your chosen provider — costs vary across private online services in the UK.

NHS vs Private: Cost, Access, and Timescales

NHS route: Mounjaro is funded by the NHS through specialist tier 3 weight management services following NICE approval. You'll need a GP referral and assessment. Access is free at point of use, but waiting lists are significant in many regions — often 6 months to 2+ years depending on your local integrated care board (ICB). Your GP can discuss NHS eligibility and local waiting times.

Private route: Available immediately through UK-licensed online prescribers following a clinical assessment (usually 15–30 minutes). You pay per dose as you progress through titration, so costs increase as you escalate. A private consultation typically costs £50–£100. This means you'll experience cost increases at weeks 5, 9, 13, 17, etc., as your dose goes up. Always confirm pricing before starting treatment.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Why does Mounjaro cost more at higher doses?

The pharmaceutical cost of tirzepatide increases with each dose strength. Higher doses contain more active ingredient. Manufacturers price each strength separately, so you pay more for 10 mg than 5 mg. This reflects production and development costs.

Can I stay on a lower Mounjaro dose if I can't afford higher doses?

Yes. Some people reach their weight loss goals on lower doses (5 mg or 7.5 mg) and don't need to escalate further. Your prescriber can help you decide the right dose for your needs. Staying on a lower dose means lower ongoing costs.

Does Mounjaro price change throughout the year in the UK?

There's no fixed annual price increase date for Mounjaro in private prescribing. However, manufacturers occasionally adjust wholesale prices, which can eventually affect retail prices. NHS pricing is negotiated nationally. Always check with your provider about current costs.

How much does a private Mounjaro prescription cost per month in total?

Starting at around £129–£180 per month (2.5–5 mg) and increasing to £280–£320+ at maximum dose (15 mg). Exact prices vary by provider. Your first month includes a consultation fee (£50–£100). Factor in titration costs when budgeting.

What if Mounjaro becomes too expensive for me?

Discuss alternatives with your prescriber. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a similar GLP-1 medication with different pricing. NHS access is free if eligible. Some providers offer payment plans or bulk discounts. Your GP can also advise on tier 3 NHS waiting lists in your area.
