What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Understanding Stomach Pain on Mounjaro

Stomach pain is a very common side effect of Mounjaro, affecting more than 1 in 10 people in clinical trials. Tirzepatide works by slowing how quickly food leaves your stomach and signalling to your brain that you're full — these mechanisms can cause abdominal discomfort, particularly in the first few weeks of treatment or when your dose increases.

Most stomach pain on Mounjaro is mild to moderate and tends to improve as your body adjusts to the medication. Pain typically occurs after eating and may feel like indigestion, cramping, or general abdominal discomfort rather than severe pain. The pain usually resolves within a few days to weeks of starting or increasing your dose, though individual experiences vary significantly.

  • Pain is most common in the first 4 weeks of treatment
  • Pain often improves as your body adjusts (tolerance builds)
  • Eating smaller, simpler meals can help reduce symptoms
  • Staying hydrated supports digestive comfort

When Stomach Pain Is Serious — Seek Immediate Help

While most stomach pain on Mounjaro is mild, some pain signals a medical emergency. Seek urgent medical attention (call 999 or go to A&E) if you experience severe, persistent stomach pain that spreads to your back, especially if accompanied by vomiting or fever. This could indicate pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), a serious complication that requires immediate hospital assessment.

Contact your GP urgently (same day if possible) if you have moderate stomach pain lasting more than a few days, pain that worsens despite eating smaller meals, or pain accompanied by yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder issues). Your prescriber may adjust your dose, pause treatment, or recommend management strategies. Never ignore persistent pain — your GP can assess whether it's a normal side effect or something requiring intervention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is stomach pain normal when starting Mounjaro?

Yes. Stomach pain affects more than 1 in 10 people taking Mounjaro and is one of the most common side effects. It's usually mild to moderate and improves within days to weeks as your body adjusts. However, if pain is severe or persistent, contact your GP.

What can I do to reduce stomach pain from Mounjaro?

Eat smaller, more frequent meals; avoid fatty or spicy foods; stay hydrated; eat slowly; and rest after meals. These simple steps often ease discomfort significantly. Ask your GP about over-the-counter remedies if pain persists. Your prescriber may also adjust your dose timing.

How long does stomach pain last on Mounjaro?

Most stomach pain improves within 3–7 days as your body adjusts. Some people experience mild discomfort for 2–3 weeks. If pain lasts longer than 2–3 weeks or worsens, contact your GP for guidance and possible dose adjustment.

When should I contact my GP about Mounjaro stomach pain?

Contact your GP urgently if you have severe pain spreading to your back, pain lasting more than a few days despite small meals, vomiting, fever, or yellowing of skin or eyes. These may indicate pancreatitis or gallbladder problems requiring medical assessment.

Is stomach pain on Mounjaro the same as on Wegovy?

Both Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are GLP-1 medications that can cause stomach pain, but Mounjaro uses a dual GIP+GLP-1 mechanism which may cause slightly different patterns. Individual experiences vary greatly — some people tolerate one better than the other.
