How to Access Mounjaro in the UK

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is available in the UK through two main routes: NHS specialist weight management services and private online prescribing following a clinical assessment. Understanding where and how to obtain Mounjaro, what eligibility criteria apply, and how NHS access differs from private access will help you determine the best route for your situation. Your GP can advise you on NHS options in your area, whilst private prescribing offers a faster alternative without waiting lists.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

NHS Access to Mounjaro in the UK

NHS availability: NICE has approved tirzepatide (Mounjaro) for use within NHS specialist weight management services, but access is not through your GP directly. You must be referred to a tier 3 or tier 4 specialist multidisciplinary weight management service. These are regional services that assess whether prescription weight loss treatment is appropriate for you alongside lifestyle changes.

Eligibility for NHS treatment: You may be eligible if you have a BMI of 30 kg/m² or above, or 27–29.9 kg/m² with a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnoea. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults, lower thresholds may apply (BMI 27.5 or above).

Waiting times: NHS specialist services have variable waiting lists depending on your region. Some areas have waits of several months to over a year. Your GP can tell you current waiting times for your local integrated care board (ICB).

Private Mounjaro Access and Your Options

Private access to Mounjaro is available through UK-licensed prescribers via online consultations and GPhC-registered pharmacies, without requiring an NHS referral or waiting list. A clinical assessment is still required—your prescriber will review your medical history, current medications, and weight-related health conditions to confirm suitability. Costs typically range from £150–£250 per month depending on your dose, as private prescribing is not currently funded by the NHS. Both NHS and private routes require you to use our free GLP-1 weight loss calculator and BMI calculator to understand where you sit in terms of eligibility and what realistic expectations are.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Can I get Mounjaro on the NHS?

Yes, NICE has approved Mounjaro for NHS specialist weight management services. You need a referral from your GP to a tier 3 or tier 4 service in your area. Availability and waiting times vary by region. Contact your GP to check current waiting times for your integrated care board.

What's the difference between NHS and private Mounjaro?

NHS access is free but involves waiting lists and referral requirements. Private access is faster and doesn't require NHS referral, but costs £150–£250/month. Both require clinical assessment. Your prescriber is the key difference—NHS prescribers are based in specialist services; private prescribers work via online consultation.

Am I eligible for NHS Mounjaro?

You may be eligible if you have a BMI ≥30, or BMI 27–29.9 with a weight-related condition (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea). For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Caribbean adults, lower thresholds apply. Your GP can assess your eligibility.

How long does private Mounjaro take to obtain?

Private access is significantly faster. After your online consultation is approved, your prescription is typically issued within 1–2 working days and dispatched by your pharmacy. You could be starting treatment within days rather than months.

Is Mounjaro available everywhere in the UK on the NHS?

NHS Mounjaro is available through specialist services, but access varies by region. Some areas have better provision than others. Your GP or local integrated care board can confirm what's available in your area and current waiting times.
