What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Private Access Costs and NHS Route Explained

Private access to Mounjaro is available through online consultations with UK-licensed prescribers, typically costing £129–£320 monthly depending on your dose. The 2.5 mg starting dose sits at the lower end, while higher maintenance doses (10–15 mg) cost more. Costs usually include the online consultation, clinical assessment, and prescription. You can track your progress using our GLP-1 weight loss calculator to estimate potential outcomes at different doses.

  • Starting dose (2.5 mg): approximately £129–£160/month
  • Mid-range dose (5–7.5 mg): approximately £180–£240/month
  • Maintenance dose (10–15 mg): approximately £260–£320/month

NHS access requires referral to a tier 3 specialist weight management service through your GP. If approved and available in your area, NHS Mounjaro would be provided at no direct cost (prescription charge applies if eligible). However, NHS availability is extremely limited and varies significantly by region; many areas have waiting lists of several months to over a year.

How to Access and What to Expect

To access Mounjaro privately, you'll complete an online health questionnaire and video or telephone consultation with a UK-licensed prescriber. They'll assess your BMI, health conditions, and medication history to confirm suitability. If approved, your prescription is sent to a GPhC-registered pharmacy for dispensing. The entire process typically takes 1–3 working days from consultation to receiving your KwikPen. You'll inject once weekly into your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Use our free BMI calculator to check if your current weight meets typical eligibility criteria (BMI 30+, or 27+ with weight-related health conditions), and track your weekly injections and weight changes with our progress tracker.

NHS route: Ask your GP for referral to your local tier 3 weight management service. They'll assess you against NHS criteria and discuss options including GLP-1 injections if available. Private route: Book an online consultation directly with a UK prescriber. You'll need to provide accurate health information, current medications, and medical history. Prescribers cannot legally issue prescriptions for anyone under 18, pregnant, or breastfeeding. Once your prescription is issued and dispensed, you'll receive your medication with full instructions on injection technique, storage (refrigerate unopened pens at 2–8°C), and when to seek medical advice.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is Mounjaro available on the NHS in the UK?

Yes, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is approved by NICE for use within NHS tier 3 specialist weight management services. However, availability is extremely limited and regional. Most areas have waiting lists of many months. Your GP can refer you to your local service, but NHS access is not assured. Private prescription routes are faster.

How much does Mounjaro cost privately in the UK?

Private Mounjaro costs range from approximately £129–£320 per month depending on your dose. Starting dose (2.5 mg) is cheapest; maintenance doses (10–15 mg) are more expensive. This typically includes the online consultation, clinical assessment, prescription, and dispensing. Prices vary between providers.

What happens during an online Mounjaro consultation?

You'll complete a health questionnaire and have a video or telephone consultation with a UK-licensed prescriber. They'll review your weight, BMI, medical history, and current medications to assess suitability. If approved, they issue a prescription to a GPhC-registered pharmacy. The entire process takes 1–3 working days from consultation to receiving your injection.

Can I get Mounjaro on prescription without seeing my GP?

Yes. You can access Mounjaro privately via online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber without GP referral. However, if you prefer the NHS route, your GP must refer you to a tier 3 weight management service. Private access is faster; NHS access is free but availability varies greatly by region.

Do I need to repeat consultations when I reorder Mounjaro?

Yes. Most private prescribing services require periodic follow-up consultations (typically monthly) to monitor your progress, side effects, and dose suitability. This is a safety requirement and cost is usually included in your monthly fee. Your prescriber may also request blood pressure or weight checks.
