NHS Height to Weight Chart — What's a Healthy Weight for Your Height?
The NHS provides clear guidance on healthy weight ranges for different heights, based on BMI categories. Rather than a single "ideal" weight, the NHS recommends a healthy weight range — typically spanning about 20kg — because body composition, muscle mass, and frame size all vary between individuals. This guide explains how NHS height-to-weight charts work, how to find your healthy range, and what it means for your health. Use our free BMI calculator and weight converter above to check your personal numbers instantly.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
How NHS Height-to-Weight Charts Work
The NHS height-to-weight chart is based on BMI (Body Mass Index), which divides your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. A healthy BMI sits between 18.5 and 24.9 according to NHS guidance.
For each height, this creates a weight range rather than a single target weight:
- At 5ft 4in (163cm): healthy weight range is approximately 47–64kg (7st 6lbs–10st 1lb)
- At 5ft 8in (173cm): healthy weight range is approximately 55–74kg (8st 9lbs–11st 9lbs)
- At 5ft 10in (178cm): healthy weight range is approximately 59–79kg (9st 4lbs–12st 5lbs)
- At 6ft (183cm): healthy weight range is approximately 64–86kg (10st 1lb–13st 8lbs)
These ranges assume average frame size. Your GP can provide personalised advice based on your muscle mass, medical history, and individual health goals.

NHS Guidance: Ethnicity-Adjusted Thresholds
The NHS recognises that different ethnic groups face different health risks at the same BMI. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, lower BMI thresholds apply:
- Healthy weight: BMI 18.5–22.9 (instead of 18.5–24.9)
- Overweight: BMI 23.0–27.4 (instead of 25.0–29.9)
- Obese: BMI 27.5 and above (instead of 30.0 and above)
This adjustment reflects evidence showing these populations have higher cardiovascular and diabetes risk at lower BMI levels. Your GP can discuss whether these thresholds apply to you and what healthy weight means for your specific health profile.

How We Built These Tools
Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.
All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.
We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What's the difference between a healthy weight and an ideal weight?
A healthy weight range is evidence-based (NHS BMI 18.5–24.9) and applies to most adults. An "ideal" weight is personal and varies by frame size, muscle mass, and health goals. The NHS recommends aiming for your healthy weight range rather than a single number. Use our BMI calculator to find your personal range.
Can I use an NHS height-to-weight chart if I'm very muscular?
BMI has limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. If you're athletic or very muscular, your BMI may be higher than expected but your body fat percentage may be healthy. Discuss your personal weight with your GP, who can assess your overall fitness and health rather than BMI alone.
What if my weight is outside the healthy range?
Being outside the healthy range doesn't mean you're unwell — it means your GP may want to discuss your health. Even a 5–clinically studied weight loss can improve blood pressure, blood sugar, and joint health. Your GP can advise on whether lifestyle changes, referral to NHS weight management services, or other support would help.
Are NHS height-to-weight charts different for different ages?
These charts apply to adults (18+). Children use different, age-specific growth charts because they're still developing. If you're concerned about a child's weight, ask your GP or health visitor for advice using the NHS Child Growth Chart system.
How do I convert between stone and kilograms to check my weight range?
Use our free weight converter above to switch instantly between kg, stone, and lbs. Alternatively: divide kilograms by 6.35 to get stone, or multiply kilograms by 2.20462 to get pounds. Your healthy weight range in stone and pounds is shown in the section above.
