What Is the Normal BMI Range for Men?

According to NHS guidelines, the normal or healthy BMI range for men is 18.5 to 24.9, regardless of age. This range applies to adult men of all backgrounds. However, if you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends a slightly lower healthy range of 18.5 to 22.9, as these populations face higher health risks at higher BMI levels. A BMI outside this range may indicate overweight or obesity-related health concerns. Use our free BMI calculator above to check where you fall and understand what it means for your health.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Understanding the Normal BMI Range and How to Calculate It

The normal BMI range for men is 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m², according to NHS guidelines. This applies to men aged 18 and over. The BMI formula is straightforward: divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For example, a man who weighs 80kg and is 1.80m tall would have a BMI of approximately 24.7—falling comfortably within the healthy range.

  • Underweight: BMI below 18.5
  • Healthy weight (normal): BMI 18.5–24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25.0–29.9
  • Obese (Class I): BMI 30.0–34.9
  • Obese (Class II): BMI 35.0–39.9
  • Severely obese: BMI 40.0 and above

The healthy BMI range corresponds to the lowest health risk for most populations. You can calculate your BMI using the free calculator on this page, or convert your weight between kg, stone, and pounds using our weight converter to help identify your healthy weight range.

BMI Limitations and What Else Matters for Men's Health

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has significant limitations. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat—muscular men may have a high BMI but low body fat, meaning the reading alone doesn't reflect true health status. Waist circumference is equally important: men with a waist over 94cm (37 inches) have increased health risk, and over 102cm (40 inches) indicates high risk, even at a "normal" BMI. For a complete health picture, your GP may also assess blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and lifestyle factors. If you have concerns about your weight or health, speak to your GP, who can give personalised advice beyond what a BMI reading shows.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is a BMI of 24 normal for men?

Yes. A BMI of 24 falls within the NHS healthy weight range of 18.5–24.9 for men. This is considered a normal, healthy BMI with low health risk. If you're concerned about any aspect of your health, your GP can provide personalised guidance.

What is a good BMI for a 30-year-old man?

The same healthy BMI range applies to all adult men regardless of age: 18.5–24.9. However, factors like muscle mass, waist measurement, and overall fitness also matter. Your GP can assess your individual health status beyond BMI alone.

Is BMI accurate for muscular men?

No, BMI has limitations for muscular individuals. Muscle weighs more than fat, so a muscular man may have a high BMI but low body fat and good health. Waist circumference and body composition are better indicators for very active or muscular men.

What's the normal BMI range for men of South Asian heritage?

The NHS recommends a slightly lower healthy range of 18.5–22.9 for men of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean descent. These groups face higher cardiovascular and diabetes risk at higher BMI levels, so earlier intervention may be appropriate.

How do I calculate my BMI if I weigh in stone?

Convert your weight to kilograms first (divide stone by 6.35). Use our weight converter above to switch between stone, pounds, and kilograms. Then divide your weight in kg by your height in metres squared. Your BMI calculator on this page does this automatically.
