What Is A Normal Body Weight For Men?

There's no single "normal" body weight for men — it varies significantly by height, age, muscle mass, and frame size. However, the NHS provides clear guidance on healthy weight ranges based on BMI (Body Mass Index). For UK adults, a healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9, though these thresholds may be lower for men of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage. The average UK adult man weighs approximately 85.7 kg (13 stone 7 lbs) and stands around 175.3 cm (5 feet 9 inches) tall — though this is average, not necessarily ideal. Your personal healthy weight depends on your individual height and health status.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges For Men By Height

Using NHS BMI guidelines, here are healthy weight ranges for common male heights:

  • 5ft 6in (168cm): 51–69 kg (8st 0lbs – 10st 12lbs)
  • 5ft 8in (173cm): 55–74 kg (8st 9lbs – 11st 8lbs)
  • 5ft 10in (178cm): 59–80 kg (9st 3lbs – 12st 8lbs)
  • 6ft (183cm): 64–86 kg (10st 1lbs – 13st 8lbs)
  • 6ft 2in (188cm): 69–92 kg (10st 12lbs – 14st 7lbs)

These ranges assume a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 — the NHS healthy weight category. Men of South Asian or Black African heritage may have increased health risks at lower BMI levels, so lower thresholds apply. Use our free BMI calculator above to check your personal BMI instantly and see where you fall within these ranges.

Why BMI Has Limitations — And What Else Matters

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or where fat is stored on the body. A muscular athlete may have a high BMI but low body fat percentage. Waist circumference is equally important — the NHS recommends men keep waist measurements below 94 cm (37 inches) for general health, and below 102 cm (40 inches) to avoid significantly increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. Age also matters; men's metabolism slows with age, and weight management becomes more important for preventing age-related health conditions. Your GP can provide personalised advice about what your weight means for your individual health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's the average weight of a man in the UK?

According to ONS data, the average UK adult man weighs approximately 85.7 kg (13 stone 7 lbs) and is around 175.3 cm (5 feet 9 inches) tall. However, "average" is not the same as "healthy" — the NHS recommends a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for optimal health, which will vary by individual height.

How do I work out my healthy weight range?

Calculate your BMI using your height and weight — our free BMI calculator on this page does this instantly. For a healthy BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, multiply your height in metres by itself, then divide your weight in kg by this number. Your GP can also advise on healthy weight for your individual circumstances.

Does muscle weight count differently than fat weight?

Yes. BMI treats all weight the same, but muscle is denser than fat. A man with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat and excellent health. Waist circumference and overall fitness matter more than BMI alone. Your GP or a health professional can assess your body composition.

What weight should I aim for if I want to lose weight?

Rather than targeting a specific number, aim for a BMI in the healthy range (18.5–24.9) and a waist measurement below 94 cm. Even losing 5–10% of your current body weight can significantly improve health. Our free progress tracker helps you log weight loss goals and track progress over time alongside a healthier diet and increased physical activity.

Are there weight loss options available in the UK if I'm overweight?

Yes. The NHS offers tier 1–4 weight management services depending on your BMI and health. For some men, prescription weight loss medications may be considered. These require a clinical assessment and are typically used alongside lifestyle changes. Your GP can refer you to appropriate services or you can access private weight management support through licensed prescribers.
