What's a Normal Weight Per Height?

Your healthy weight depends on your height, but the specific amount varies based on individual factors like muscle mass and frame size. The NHS provides a healthy weight range for each height using BMI guidelines. For example, at 173cm (5ft 8in), a healthy weight is approximately 55–74kg (8st 8lbs to 11st 9lbs). Rather than aiming for a single "ideal" number, it's more useful to aim for a healthy weight range where your BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9. This approach acknowledges that healthy weights vary significantly between individuals.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges by Height (UK Data)

The healthy weight range for your height is calculated using BMI guidelines. Below is a reference table showing healthy weight ranges for common UK heights:

  • 150cm (4ft 11in): 41–56kg (6st 6lbs to 8st 11lbs)
  • 160cm (5ft 3in): 47–64kg (7st 5lbs to 10st 1lbs)
  • 165cm (5ft 5in): 50–67kg (7st 12lbs to 10st 8lbs)
  • 170cm (5ft 7in): 53–71kg (8st 5lbs to 11st 2lbs)
  • 173cm (5ft 8in): 55–74kg (8st 8lbs to 11st 9lbs)
  • 180cm (5ft 11in): 60–81kg (9st 5lbs to 12st 11lbs)
  • 185cm (6ft 1in): 63–85kg (9st 13lbs to 13st 5lbs)

Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal healthy weight range instantly. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean backgrounds, the NHS recommends slightly lower thresholds—your GP can advise on targets suited to your ethnicity.

Factors That Affect Your Ideal Body Weight

Muscle mass is the primary reason two people at the same height can have different healthy weights. Muscle weighs more than fat, so someone with greater muscle mass may be heavier but still healthy. Frame size also matters—people with larger bone structure naturally weigh more. Age affects weight distribution and metabolism; older adults may need different targets. Sex influences body composition; women typically have higher healthy body fat percentages. Rather than fixating on a single number, focus on whether your weight falls within the healthy range for your height and how you feel physically. Our free weight converter helps you switch between kg, stone, and lbs to track progress in your preferred units.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the average UK weight for my height?

Average weight varies by height and sex. According to ONS data, the average UK adult man (175.3cm) weighs approximately 85.7kg (13st 7lbs), and the average UK adult woman (161.6cm) weighs approximately 71.6kg (11st 3lbs). However, "average" is not the same as "healthy"—many UK adults are overweight or obese, so aim for a healthy weight range rather than the average.

How do I calculate my healthy weight range for my height?

Use the BMI formula: a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. To find your weight range, multiply 18.5 by your height in metres squared (for the lower bound) and 24.9 by the same figure (for the upper bound). For example, at 1.73m, healthy weights are 55–74kg. Our free BMI calculator does this instantly—just enter your height and it shows your personal range.

Is my ideal weight different if I'm muscular or have a larger frame?

Yes. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so very muscular individuals may have a higher BMI despite low body fat. Frame size also affects healthy weight—larger-framed people naturally weigh more. If you're very muscular or have concerns about your weight despite being in a healthy BMI range, discuss this with your GP, who may assess body composition or waist measurement for a fuller picture.

Should I aim for the exact middle of my healthy weight range?

Not necessarily. Any weight within your healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) is appropriate for you. Your ideal weight depends on how you feel, your energy levels, and your individual health factors. Rather than chasing a single number, focus on falling within the range and maintaining healthy habits. A progress tracker can help you monitor your journey without fixating on a specific target.

Does the healthy weight range change if I'm pregnant or have a medical condition?

Yes. Pregnancy requires different weight gain targets—your midwife or GP will advise. Some medical conditions (like fluid retention, muscle-wasting conditions, or thyroid disorders) affect what a healthy weight means for you. Always discuss your personal healthy weight target with your GP, especially if you have existing health conditions or take medications that affect weight.
