Optimal Weight for Men: Finding Your Healthy Range
There's no single "optimal" weight for men — it depends on your height, age, muscle mass, and individual health. However, the NHS provides clear healthy weight ranges based on BMI (body mass index), which gives you a personalised target to work towards. Understanding your healthy weight range is the first step towards meaningful weight management and better long-term health outcomes. Use our free BMI calculator to find where you currently stand, and our weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and pounds for easy tracking.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
NHS Healthy Weight Ranges for Men
The NHS defines a healthy weight as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for most adults. To find your optimal weight range, you need to know your height. For example, a man who is 5ft 9in (175cm) tall has a healthy weight range of approximately 61–75kg (9st 8lbs to 11st 10lbs). A man at 6ft (183cm) has a healthy range of 65–82kg (10st 3lbs to 12st 13lbs).
However, if you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds — a healthy BMI range of 18.5 to 22.9. This is because these groups face higher risks of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower weight levels.
Calculate your personal healthy weight range using our free BMI calculator above. Simply enter your height and current weight, and you'll see exactly where you fall on the NHS scale.

Factors Beyond BMI: Why Optimal Weight Is Individual
Optimal weight isn't just about the number on the scales. BMI doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or where fat is stored on your body. A very muscular man might have a "high" BMI but excellent health. Age also matters — older men naturally lose muscle and may have a slightly different optimal range.
Waist circumference is equally important: the NHS warns that men with a waist above 94cm (37in) have increased health risk, and above 102cm (40in) have high risk, regardless of overall weight. Track your progress using our free weight tracker to monitor changes over time, alongside measurements and how you feel.
Other factors affecting optimal weight include:
- Medical conditions: Diabetes, heart disease, or joint problems may influence your target weight
- Fitness level: Athletes and active men may optimally weigh more than sedentary men of the same height
- Family history: Genetic factors influence your natural weight range
- Medications: Some medications affect weight management
Your GP can discuss your individual optimal weight and whether any intervention — from lifestyle changes to weight management support — is appropriate for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
How do I calculate my optimal weight for my height?
Use the NHS healthy weight ranges: for men, a BMI of 18.5–24.9 is healthy. Multiply your height in metres by itself, then divide your weight in kg by that number. Use our free BMI calculator above to calculate instantly — just enter your height and weight.
What's the average weight for UK men?
According to ONS data, the average UK adult man weighs approximately 85.7kg (13st 7lbs) and is 175.3cm (5ft 9in) tall, giving an average BMI of 27.9 — which falls into the overweight category. However, average doesn't mean optimal.
Is muscle weight counted differently than fat weight?
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, which is a limitation. A muscular man may have a "high" BMI but low body fat and good health. Waist circumference is a better indicator of health risk — measure around your waist at navel level.
Can my optimal weight change over time?
Yes. As you age, you naturally lose muscle mass, so your optimal weight may shift slightly. Health conditions, fitness levels, and life circumstances also change your target. Review your goals regularly with your GP, especially if your health changes.
What if I'm overweight — how do I reach my optimal weight safely?
The NHS recommends losing 0.5–1kg per week for sustainable results. This requires a calorie deficit of around 500kcal daily, achieved through diet and physical activity. If you need support, your GP can refer you to weight management services or discuss whether medication might help.
