How to Lose Stomach Weight Safely in the UK

Losing stomach fat is one of the most common weight loss goals, but it requires a combination of healthy eating, physical activity, and sometimes medical support. Where you carry excess weight matters — belly fat (visceral fat) poses particular health risks. Our free GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help you explore how prescription weight loss options might support your goals, whilst our BMI calculator shows how your current weight affects your overall health. This guide explains evidence-based approaches to stomach weight loss, from lifestyle changes to prescription medications available in the UK.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Why Stomach Fat Is Different

Belly fat is not just a cosmetic concern — visceral fat stored around the stomach poses greater health risks than fat stored elsewhere. Research shows that visceral fat increases risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver disease more significantly than subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin).

Even at a healthy BMI, excess stomach weight can be problematic. The NHS recommends monitoring waist circumference alongside weight: men should aim for under 94cm (37 inches), and women under 80cm (31.5 inches). Waist-to-height ratio is also a useful indicator — a healthy ratio is below 0.5.

This is why targeted stomach weight loss through overall body weight reduction, combined with core-strengthening exercise, can have significant health benefits beyond what the scales show.

Evidence-Based Methods for Losing Stomach Weight

Sustainable stomach weight loss requires a calorie deficit — typically 500 kcal per day results in approximately 0.5kg loss per week, according to NHS guidance. This works best combined with exercise that builds core strength and cardiovascular fitness.

Dietary approaches shown to reduce belly fat specifically include Mediterranean-style eating and reducing refined carbohydrates and sugar. Physical activity combining aerobic exercise (walking, running, swimming) with resistance training helps preserve muscle whilst fat loss occurs.

For adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27–29.9 with weight-related conditions, prescription weight loss medication may be available through NHS weight management services or private prescribing. Medications like Wegovy (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) support appetite regulation alongside lifestyle changes. Always consult your GP about whether prescription weight loss is suitable for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Can you lose weight from your stomach only?

No, you cannot target fat loss from one area — your body loses fat overall. However, as you lose weight, belly fat often reduces first because visceral fat is metabolically active. Regular exercise and a calorie deficit are the most effective approaches.

Does Wegovy help with stomach weight loss?

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription GLP-1 injection licensed for weight management in the UK. In clinical trials, it helped participants lose an average of 15% of body weight through appetite regulation. Individual results vary, and it works alongside diet and exercise — not instead of them.

What's the fastest safe way to lose stomach fat?

The NHS recommends losing 0.5–1kg per week for sustainable results. A calorie deficit of 500 kcal per day, combined with regular exercise, achieves this safely. Very gradual weight management risks muscle loss and is not recommended without medical supervision.

How do I know if I have too much stomach fat?

Check your waist circumference: men over 94cm (37in) or women over 80cm (31.5in) have increased health risk. Use our free BMI calculator and weight converter to understand your current health metrics and set safe targets.

Can weight loss medication reduce belly fat specifically?

GLP-1 medications like Wegovy support overall weight loss, which reduces visceral fat over time. They work by regulating appetite and are prescribed as part of a comprehensive weight management plan including diet and exercise — always consult your GP first.
