Stone Weight Chart — UK Health Reference Guide

A stone weight chart is a practical reference tool that shows how different weights in stone relate to health categories according to NHS guidelines. In the UK, we commonly measure body weight in stone and pounds, making a detailed weight chart essential for understanding whether your weight falls into a healthy range. This guide provides UK-specific health information, conversion data, and NHS health advice to help you contextualise your weight within evidence-based health thresholds.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

UK Weight Categories and NHS Health Thresholds

The NHS uses BMI (Body Mass Index) as the primary screening tool to categorise weight ranges, which applies alongside your height. For UK adults, these categories are:

  • Underweight: BMI below 18.5
  • Healthy weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25.0 to 29.9
  • Obese (Class I): BMI 30.0 to 34.9
  • Obese (Class II): BMI 35.0 to 39.9
  • Severely obese (Class III): BMI 40.0 and above

However, weight alone doesn't determine health — your height, body composition, and where fat is stored all matter. For people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds because these groups face higher health risks at lower BMI levels. Use our free BMI calculator above to check your personal BMI instantly and see which category you fall into.

Stone to Kilogram Conversions and Practical Reference

Converting between stone and kilograms is straightforward using the standard conversion: 1 stone = 6.35 kg. To use a stone weight chart effectively, find your weight in stone on the left side and read across to see the equivalent in kilograms and BMI context. For example, 10 stone equals approximately 63.5 kg, which for most adults falls into the overweight or healthy weight range depending on height. Our free weight converter above lets you switch instantly between stone, kg, and pounds — simply enter your weight and see all three measurements. This makes it easy to track your weight in whatever unit feels most natural to you.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How do I use a stone weight chart to find my healthy weight range?

Find your height on the chart, then look across to see the weight range in stone that corresponds to a healthy BMI (18.5–24.9). For example, at 5ft 6in, a healthy weight range is roughly 8st 9lbs to 11st 3lbs. Remember that healthy weight varies by frame size and muscle mass — your GP can give personalised guidance for your individual situation.

What is the difference between stone and kilograms on a weight chart?

Stone is the traditional UK measurement; 1 stone equals 14 pounds or 6.35 kilograms. Most of the world uses kg, but UK weight charts typically show both measurements. Our weight converter tool above helps you switch between units instantly, making it easy to understand your weight in whichever measurement you prefer.

Can a stone weight chart tell me if I'm at a healthy weight?

A weight chart provides a starting point, but it doesn't account for height or body composition. BMI is more useful because it combines weight and height. However, BMI has limitations — it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. For personalised advice about whether your weight is healthy, speak to your GP or use our BMI calculator to check your personal BMI category.

What UK health statistics should I know about weight and health?

According to NHS data, around 63% of UK adults are overweight or obese, and obesity contributes to significant health risks including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Even losing 5–10% of body weight can improve blood pressure, blood sugar control, and cholesterol levels. If you're concerned about your weight, your GP can discuss weight management options that are right for you.

Where can I find NHS guidance on weight management in the UK?

The NHS website offers a free Weight Loss Plan, and your GP can refer you to specialist weight management services if needed. Your GP can also discuss whether prescription weight loss treatment might be appropriate for you if you have a BMI above 30 or 27 with weight-related health conditions. Our BMI calculator and weight management tools above can help you understand your starting point.
