Typical Weight For Height in the UK
There's no single "typical" weight that applies to everyone at a given height — it depends on age, muscle mass, bone density, and individual body composition. However, the NHS provides healthy weight ranges based on BMI, which offer a useful reference point. For any given height, there's a range of weights that fall within the healthy BMI category of 18.5 to 24.9. Use our free BMI calculator above to check where your personal weight sits relative to these NHS guidelines, regardless of your height.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
NHS Healthy Weight Ranges by Height
The NHS defines healthy weight as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. This means that for any given height, there's a range of weights considered healthy rather than a single number. For example, at 5ft 7in (170cm), the healthy weight range is approximately 50–68kg (7st 12lbs to 10st 10lbs). At 5ft 10in (178cm), it's around 55–76kg (8st 9lbs to 11st 13lbs). These ranges reflect that muscle weighs more than fat, so a muscular person may have a higher weight within the healthy range than someone with less muscle at the same height.
For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends slightly lower thresholds due to higher health risks at lower BMI levels. Your GP can advise whether standard or adjusted thresholds are more appropriate for you based on your individual health profile and family history.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is the typical weight for someone who is 5ft 9in?
At 5ft 9in (175cm), the healthy weight range is approximately 54–73kg (8st 6lbs to 11st 7lbs) according to NHS BMI guidelines. However, "typical" varies — UK adults average around 85kg for men and 72kg for women. Use our BMI calculator to check where your personal weight sits within the healthy range for your height.
Is there a standard healthy weight for height chart in the UK?
The NHS doesn't publish a single "standard chart" because healthy weight varies by individual factors like muscle mass and bone density. Instead, NHS guidance recommends using BMI, which provides a healthy range for each height rather than a single number. Our free BMI calculator generates your personal healthy weight range instantly.
Can I use a weight converter to find my typical weight range?
Our weight converter helps you switch between kg, stone, and pounds, but it doesn't determine healthy weight ranges. For that, you'll need to use our BMI calculator, which takes both your height and weight into account and aligns with NHS health guidance for UK adults.
Should I aim for a specific weight or a weight range?
The NHS recommends aiming for a healthy weight range rather than a single number. This is because people of the same height have different muscle mass, bone density, and frame sizes. A range typically spans 8–15kg depending on height. Your GP can help you set a realistic, personalised weight management goal based on your health.
Does typical weight for height differ by age or gender?
BMI-based healthy weight ranges are the same regardless of age or gender — they depend only on height and weight. However, people of different ages and genders may have different average weights due to natural body composition changes. Older adults may lose muscle, and men typically have more muscle than women. Your GP can advise on age-specific health context.
