What's a Typical Weight For Your Height?
There's no single "ideal" weight for any given height — weight varies based on muscle mass, bone density, age, and individual genetics. However, the NHS provides healthy weight ranges based on BMI thresholds. Using our free BMI calculator, you can determine whether your current weight falls within the healthy range for your height. The real measure of health isn't a specific number, but whether your weight supports good physical function and reduces disease risk. For context, our weight converter can help you switch between kg, stone, and pounds to understand your weight in the units you prefer.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
NHS Healthy Weight Ranges By Height
The NHS defines a healthy weight range as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m². This range varies significantly by height. For example, at 5ft 8in (173cm), a healthy weight is approximately 55–75kg (8st 9lbs to 11st 11lbs). At 5ft 4in (163cm), the range is roughly 47–64kg (7st 5lbs to 10st 1lbs). For 6ft (183cm), healthy weight is approximately 64–82kg (10st 1lbs to 12st 12lbs).
These ranges are based on population averages and clinical evidence showing lower health risks within these BMI bands. However, muscle mass affects these numbers — someone very muscular may have a higher weight within a healthy BMI, whilst someone sedentary may fall within the range but carry excess fat. The NHS recommends considering both BMI and waist circumference as screening tools. For men, a waist over 94cm (37in) indicates increased health risk; for women, over 80cm (31.5in).

What About Ethnicity-Adjusted Thresholds?
The NHS recognises that healthy weight thresholds differ for people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean heritage. These groups face higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower BMI levels. For these populations, the NHS recommends a healthy weight range of BMI 18.5–22.9 (rather than 18.5–24.9). At 5ft 8in, this would mean a healthy weight of approximately 55–68kg (8st 9lbs to 10st 10lbs) instead of the standard range. This is important context when discussing typical weight, as there is no truly "typical" weight — only ranges that support health for specific individuals. Your GP can provide personalised guidance on what weight range is right for you based on your age, medical history, ethnicity, and lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is the average weight for a 5ft 10in adult in the UK?
The UK average for an adult male around 5ft 10in is approximately 87kg (13st 9lbs), though this is above the healthy BMI range. Individual healthy weight varies — use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal range based on your height and current weight.
Is there a formula to calculate ideal weight for height?
Several formulas exist (Devine, Robinson, Miller), but they're approximate guides only. The NHS healthy weight range based on BMI is more evidence-based. At your height, BMI 18.5–24.9 gives a weight range that supports health for most adults. Always consult your GP for personalised advice.
Does muscle weight affect what's "typical"?
Yes — muscle is denser than fat, so someone muscular may weigh more but have lower body fat percentage. BMI alone doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. That's why our weight converter and BMI calculator should be used alongside waist measurement and GP assessment for full health context.
Why do typical weights differ by ethnicity?
Research shows South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults face higher health risks at lower BMI levels. The NHS recommends BMI 18.5–22.9 for these groups instead of the standard 18.5–24.9, reflecting different metabolic and genetic factors affecting disease risk.
How can I find my healthy weight range?
