What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

NHS Weight Categories and Healthy Ranges

The NHS defines healthy weight using BMI (Body Mass Index) categories, which apply to all UK adults aged 18 and over. A healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m². However, for adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds due to higher health risks at the same BMI levels.

  • Healthy weight: BMI 18.5–24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25.0–29.9
  • Obese (Class I): BMI 30.0–34.9
  • Obese (Class II): BMI 35.0–39.9
  • Severely obese: BMI 40.0 and above

Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal BMI instantly and see where you fall within these NHS categories. Remember that BMI is a screening tool — it doesn't account for muscle mass or where fat is distributed on your body.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is a healthy weight range for an adult in the UK?

A healthy weight depends on your height and is expressed as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. For example, a 5ft 8in (173cm) adult should weigh between approximately 55–75 kg (8st 10lbs–11st 10lbs). Use our free BMI calculator to find your healthy range based on your height.

Why do South Asian, Black African, and Caribbean adults have different NHS weight thresholds?

The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for these ethnic groups because research shows they develop weight-related health complications like type 2 diabetes and heart disease at lower BMI levels than other populations. This reflects genuine biological differences in how these groups respond to excess weight.

How much weight should I aim to lose per week safely?

The NHS recommends a safe weight loss rate of 0.5–1 kg per week. This typically requires a calorie deficit of about 500 kcal per day and should be combined with sustainable dietary changes and increased physical activity. Faster weight loss can result in muscle loss and is not recommended without medical supervision.

What is the difference between overweight and obese according to NHS guidelines?

Overweight is a BMI of 25.0–29.9, while obese begins at BMI 30.0. Both categories increase health risks, but obesity carries higher risks for conditions like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. Your GP can assess your individual risk based on other factors like waist circumference and medical history.

Are there prescription weight loss medications available on the NHS in the UK?

Yes. Medications like Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are now available through NHS specialist weight management services for eligible adults. Eligibility typically requires a BMI of 30 or above, or 27+ with weight-related health conditions. Access varies by region — your GP can refer you to specialist services if appropriate.
