UK Weight Chart: Healthy Weight Ranges and NHS Guidance

A UK weight chart helps you understand whether your weight falls within a healthy range for your height. In the UK, we measure weight in stone and pounds (or kilograms), and the NHS uses Body Mass Index (BMI) as the primary screening tool to assess weight health. This guide explains how UK weight charts work, what the NHS considers a healthy weight, and how you can check your own health using free tools. Even modest weight changes can improve your overall health and wellbeing.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How UK Weight Charts Work and NHS Weight Categories

The NHS uses BMI (Body Mass Index) as the standard measure for assessing whether an adult's weight is healthy. BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. A healthy BMI for most UK adults is between 18.5 and 24.9. The NHS weight chart categories are:

  • Underweight: BMI below 18.5
  • Healthy weight: BMI 18.5–24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25.0–29.9
  • Obese (Class I): BMI 30.0–34.9
  • Obese (Class II): BMI 35.0–39.9
  • Severely obese: BMI 40.0 and above

Important: The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean heritage — these groups face higher health risks at lower BMI levels. For these populations, healthy weight is BMI 18.5–22.9, and overweight begins at BMI 23.0.

Using a UK Weight Chart: Practical Steps and Tools

To find your healthy weight range on a UK chart, you need your height and current weight. Calculate your BMI using our free BMI calculator above to see instantly where you fall on the NHS scale. For example, an adult who is 5ft 8in (173cm) tall has a healthy weight range of approximately 55–74 kg (8st 8lbs–11st 8lbs). Waist measurement also matters: the NHS recommends men keep waist circumference below 94cm (37 inches) and women below 80cm (31.5 inches). If you're concerned about your weight or health, your GP can offer personalised weight management support. Use our free weight converter to switch between stone, pounds, and kilograms easily.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the healthy weight range for an adult in the UK?

For most UK adults, a healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9. The exact weight range depends on your height — use the BMI calculator above to find your personal healthy weight range. The NHS also notes that waist circumference is important; men should aim for under 94cm and women under 80cm.

How do I read a UK weight chart?

UK weight charts show BMI categories based on your height and weight in stone/pounds or kilograms. Find your height on the left, your weight across the top, and where they meet shows your BMI category. Our free BMI calculator does this instantly for you.

Are UK weight charts different from other countries?

Yes. The UK uses stone and pounds as primary weight units (unlike most of Europe which uses kilograms). The NHS BMI thresholds are the same as international standards, but UK charts are calibrated for stone measurements. Use our weight converter to switch between units.

Do BMI charts account for muscle and bone?

No — BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes may have a high BMI but low body fat. BMI is a screening tool only, not a complete picture of health. Your GP can assess your individual health beyond BMI.

What should I do if my weight is outside the healthy range?

First, discuss with your GP — they can assess your overall health and offer support. Even losing 5–10% of your body weight brings health benefits. The NHS Weight Loss Plan, your GP, and weight management services (tier 2 and 3) offer free or NHS-funded support in most areas.
