Vibration Plate And Weight Loss: UK Prescription Options

Whilst vibration plates are marketed for fitness, evidence for significant weight loss is limited. What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

UK-Licensed Weight Loss Medications

Three prescription-only medications are currently licensed in the UK for weight management in eligible adults. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injection that works as a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. In clinical trials, it helped participants lose an average of 15–21% of their body weight over 72 weeks alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Wegovy (semaglutide) is another once-weekly injection using GLP-1 technology, with average weight loss of around 15% in clinical trials. Saxenda (liraglutide) is a daily injection option also licensed for weight management. Our GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help you estimate potential outcomes at different doses. All three medications require a prescription and clinical assessment — they are not available over the counter.

  • Mounjaro: doses from 2.5 mg to 15 mg once weekly
  • Wegovy: doses from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg once weekly
  • Saxenda: doses from 0.6 mg to 3 mg once daily

Individual results vary significantly based on adherence, lifestyle changes, and personal metabolism. Weight loss injections work best when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity — they are not a standalone solution.

NHS vs Private Access: How to Get Started

NHS access is through referral to tier 3 specialist weight management services, typically via your GP. However, availability varies widely by region and waiting lists can be lengthy — in some areas, waits exceed 12 months. Private access is faster: you can have an online consultation with a UK-licensed prescriber, receive a prescription if clinically appropriate, and collect medication from a GPhC-registered pharmacy. To find out if you're eligible, check if your BMI is 30 or above, or 27–29.9 with a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea. Our free BMI calculator above will help you determine your current BMI instantly. Your next step is to speak with your GP or book a private consultation — they will assess your individual health and discuss whether prescription weight loss treatment is suitable for you.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Do vibration plates help with weight loss?

Vibration plates alone have very limited evidence for weight loss. Whilst they may improve balance and muscle activation during exercise, they do not create the calorie deficit needed for meaningful weight loss. They work best as a supplement to conventional exercise, not a replacement.

What's the difference between Mounjaro and Wegovy for weight loss?

Both are once-weekly injections licensed in the UK for weight management. Mounjaro is a dual GIP+GLP-1 agonist, whilst Wegovy is a GLP-1 agonist only. Clinical trial data suggests Mounjaro may produce slightly higher average weight loss (15–21% vs 15%), but individual results vary. Your prescriber will recommend the most suitable option.

How much weight can I expect to lose with prescription medication?

Individual results vary significantly. Clinical trials show average weight loss of 15–21% with Mounjaro and around 15% with Wegovy — achieved alongside reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Some people lose more, some less. Your GP or prescriber will give personalised estimates based on your health profile.

Can I get weight loss injections on the NHS in the UK?

Yes, if eligible. You'll need referral to a specialist tier 3 weight management service through your NHS GP. Eligibility typically requires BMI 30 or above, or 27–29.9 with weight-related health conditions. Availability and waiting times vary by region — some areas have long waits. Private options are faster.

How do I know if I'm eligible for prescription weight loss treatment?

You may be eligible if your BMI is 30 or above, or 27–29.9 with a weight-related health condition like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea. Use our free BMI calculator to check your BMI, then speak with your GP or book a private consultation for a full clinical assessment.
