Wegovy Maintenance Dose and Weight Loss Results

Wegovy is a prescription-only, once-weekly GLP-1 injection that helps support weight loss in UK adults. The maintenance dose is 2.4 mg per week — the highest effective dose. Clinical trials showed that people on the 2.4 mg maintenance dose lost an average of around 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, though individual results vary significantly. Weight loss typically continues when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. This guide explains how the maintenance dose works, what weight loss looks like, and how it compares to other weekly weight loss injections available in the UK.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How the Wegovy Maintenance Dose Works

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — a hormone-mimicking medication that works by activating your body's natural appetite-control pathways. The maintenance dose of 2.4 mg is reached after a 16-week dose escalation schedule, starting at 0.25 mg and increasing every 4 weeks.

At the 2.4 mg maintenance level, Wegovy may help by:

  • Reducing appetite and food cravings
  • Supporting feelings of fullness after smaller meals
  • Slowing how quickly food leaves your stomach
  • Helping regulate blood sugar levels

The STEP-1 clinical trial found that participants on the 2.4 mg dose lost an average of approximately 14.9% of their starting body weight alongside a calorie-reduced diet and exercise. However, individual results vary — some people lose more, some less — and Wegovy is not effective for everyone.

Wegovy vs Mounjaro: Maintenance Dose Comparison

Both Wegovy and Mounjaro are prescription-only weekly weight loss injections available in the UK, but they work differently. Wegovy uses a single GLP-1 mechanism, while Mounjaro is a dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist. Wegovy's maximum dose is 2.4 mg (average weight loss ~15%), whilst Mounjaro's maximum dose is 15 mg (average weight loss ~15–21%). There is no official established conversion between them — any switch requires prescriber guidance. Use our GLP-1 weight loss calculator to compare projected results at different doses, and the BMI calculator to check your current health status and eligibility for treatment.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How long does it take to reach the 2.4 mg maintenance dose on Wegovy?

The full escalation schedule takes 16 weeks. You start at 0.25 mg for 4 weeks, then increase by 0.25 mg every 4 weeks: 0.5 mg (weeks 5–8), 1 mg (weeks 9–12), 1.7 mg (weeks 13–16), and finally 2.4 mg (week 17 onwards). Each increase requires at least 4 weeks at the previous dose.

Can you lose weight before reaching the 2.4 mg maintenance dose?

Yes, many people experience weight loss at lower doses. The 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 1.7 mg doses are all active, and weight loss often begins within weeks of starting treatment. The maintenance dose (2.4 mg) is the highest effective level — not necessarily where most weight loss occurs.

Is Wegovy available on the NHS in the UK?

Wegovy access through the NHS varies significantly by region. Some tier 3 specialist weight management services prescribe it, but waiting lists can be very long. Many people access Wegovy privately through UK-licensed online prescribers following a clinical assessment. Your GP can advise on NHS options in your area.

What happens to weight loss if you stop Wegovy?

Clinical evidence suggests that weight typically returns if treatment stops without sustained lifestyle changes. Wegovy is most effective when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity. Discuss long-term management options with your GP or prescriber.

How does the weekly semaglutide injection compare to daily weight loss medications?

Wegovy is a once-weekly injection, making it more convenient than daily medications like Saxenda (liraglutide), which requires a daily injection. Once-weekly dosing generally improves adherence. Your prescriber can advise whether weekly or daily treatment suits your lifestyle.
