Weight According to Height Chart — UK Health Guide
Your healthy weight depends on your height, age, and body composition — there's no single "ideal" weight for everyone. The NHS uses BMI (Body Mass Index) combined with height to determine whether a weight falls into a healthy range. This guide explains how to find your healthy weight according to height, using UK measurements and NHS health guidance, plus practical tools to assess your personal weight management goals.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
How Height Affects Healthy Weight Range
Taller people naturally weigh more than shorter people because they have greater muscle and bone mass. The NHS healthy weight range uses BMI categories to account for this difference. A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 for most UK adults. To find your healthy weight range for your height, multiply your height in metres squared by 18.5 (lower bound) and 24.9 (upper bound). For example, at 1.73m (5ft 8in), a healthy weight range is approximately 55–75 kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs). Use our free BMI calculator above to enter your height and current weight instantly. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends slightly lower thresholds (18.5 to 22.9) because these groups face higher health risks at the same BMI levels.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What's the healthy weight for someone who is 5ft 6in tall?
At 5ft 6in (168cm), a healthy BMI weight range is approximately 52–70 kg (8st 3lbs to 11st 0lbs) according to NHS guidelines. This accounts for natural variation in body composition. Use our BMI calculator above to check where your current weight falls within this range.
Does BMI tell the whole story about healthy weight?
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat — athletes may have high BMI but low body fat. Waist circumference is also important (for men: over 102cm indicates high risk; for women: over 88cm). Your GP can assess your individual health alongside BMI.
Is there a weight chart that works for all ages?
Adult BMI categories (18.5–24.9 healthy) apply from age 18 onwards. Children use age and sex-specific centile charts instead — adult categories don't apply. If you're concerned about a child's weight, ask your GP or health visitor for personalised guidance.
Why do some height and weight charts give different ranges?
Different charts may use slightly different BMI thresholds or include factors like frame size or ethnicity. The NHS BMI categories are the standard UK reference. For ethnicity-adjusted thresholds, the NHS recognises lower healthy ranges for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults.
Can I lose weight healthily at any weight?
The NHS recommends losing 0.5–1 kg per week for sustainable results. Even a 5–10% reduction in body weight can improve health markers like blood pressure and blood sugar. Your GP or a weight management service can advise on safe approaches tailored to your circumstances.
