Weight and Height Age Chart — NHS Healthy Weight Guidance

Understanding healthy weight ranges at different ages is essential for monitoring your health or your family's wellbeing. Weight and height charts vary by age because children grow at different rates, and adults' healthy weight ranges change based on individual factors like muscle mass and metabolism. This guide explains UK weight and height standards, shows you how to use charts effectively, and helps you understand what healthy weight means according to NHS guidance. Use our free BMI calculator to find your personal healthy weight range instantly.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

UK Weight and Height Charts Explained

In the UK, weight and height charts are age-specific for children and general for adults. For children and teenagers, the NHS uses the UK90 growth reference charts, which measure weight against age and sex-specific centile curves. These charts show whether a child is growing normally compared to other children of the same age.

  • Below 2nd centile: Underweight — discuss with your health visitor or GP
  • 2nd to 91st centile: Healthy weight range
  • 91st to 98th centile: Overweight — consider lifestyle review
  • Above 98th centile: Very overweight — GP assessment recommended

For adults, age is less relevant to the chart itself, but healthy weight still depends on individual factors including height, muscle mass, and existing health conditions. The NHS uses BMI (Body Mass Index) as the primary screening tool for adults, which applies the same categories across all adult ages. Use our BMI calculator above to check your personal healthy weight range based on your height.

How to Use Weight and Height Charts in UK Health Management

To find your healthy weight range using a height and weight chart:

  • Locate your height in centimetres on the vertical axis
  • Find your current weight in kilograms on the horizontal axis
  • Where the two lines meet shows your current position
  • The shaded healthy weight zone (usually between BMI 18.5–24.9) shows the target range

For children, growth charts should be checked at regular health visitor appointments and GP reviews. Small fluctuations are normal, but significant sudden changes warrant professional assessment. Our free weight converter makes it easy to switch between stone, pounds, and kilograms if your chart uses different units. For weight management support, the NHS recommends a loss of 0.5–1 kg per week for sustainable, healthy results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's the difference between UK weight charts for children and adults?

Children's charts (UK90) show growth centiles by age and sex — comparing them to other children their age. Adult charts use BMI categories that apply across all ages. Children are still developing, so age-specific measurement is essential. Adults' healthy weight depends more on individual height, muscle, and health factors than age alone.

Is my child's weight healthy according to UK charts?

If your child falls between the 2nd and 91st centile on the UK90 growth chart, their weight is generally healthy. However, charts show only one measure of health. Your health visitor or GP considers growth patterns, energy levels, diet, and overall development. Always discuss concerns with your child's health professional rather than relying on charts alone.

How accurate are weight and height charts for adults?

Charts are useful screening tools but have limitations. They don't distinguish between muscle and fat — athletes may have a high BMI despite low body fat. They also don't account for where fat is stored (waist circumference matters too). Use our BMI calculator alongside your height and weight measurement for more complete health context.

Can I use adult weight charts to check my teenager's weight?

No — teenagers are still growing, so adult BMI categories don't apply. Use the NHS UK90 growth reference charts specific to their age and sex instead. Your GP or health visitor can assess whether your teenager's weight is healthy for their individual development and growth pattern.

What should I do if my weight is outside the healthy range on the chart?

First, measure accurately (without shoes, in light clothing). Then use our free BMI calculator to confirm your result. If your weight is above the healthy range, consider speaking with your GP about weight management options, including lifestyle support or referral to NHS weight management services if appropriate for your circumstances.
