What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

NHS Healthy Weight Ranges for Women by Height

The NHS uses BMI (Body Mass Index) to define healthy weight ranges. For most women, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. Your healthy weight range depends on your height — taller women will have a higher healthy weight in kg or stone.

Here's what healthy weight looks like for common UK heights:

  • 5ft 2in (157cm): Healthy weight range 47–63kg (7st 5lbs – 9st 13lbs)
  • 5ft 4in (163cm): Healthy weight range 49–66kg (7st 10lbs – 10st 5lbs)
  • 5ft 6in (168cm): Healthy weight range 52–70kg (8st 3lbs – 11st 0lbs)
  • 5ft 8in (173cm): Healthy weight range 55–74kg (8st 8lbs – 11st 10lbs)
  • 5ft 10in (178cm): Healthy weight range 58–79kg (9st 1lb – 12st 6lbs)

These ranges are approximate — everyone is different. For women of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean background, the NHS recommends slightly lower thresholds due to higher health risks at the same BMI.

Why Height Matters More Than You Think

Weight alone tells you nothing — a woman of 70kg could be underweight, healthy, or overweight depending on whether she's 5ft tall or 6ft tall. Height is the crucial context. That's why weight-for-height charts are far more useful than scales alone.

Beyond BMI, your GP also considers where you carry weight. Waist circumference matters: a waist above 80cm (31.5 inches) increases health risk, and above 88cm (34.5 inches) signals increased risk even at a healthy BMI. Our free weight converter helps you switch between stone, kg, and lbs easily, and use the BMI calculator on this page to find your personal healthy range based on your exact height.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's the difference between healthy weight, overweight, and obese according to NHS guidelines?

The NHS categorises adults by BMI. Healthy weight is BMI 18.5–24.9. Overweight is 25.0–29.9. Obese Class I is 30.0–34.9, Class II is 35.0–39.9, and Class III (severe obesity) is 40.0+. These apply to most women; South Asian and Black African/Caribbean women have lower thresholds.

Can I use a weight and height chart if I have lots of muscle?

BMI-based charts assume average body composition and don't distinguish muscle from fat. Athletes or very muscular women may have a high BMI but low body fat. If you're very fit, discuss your results with your GP rather than relying on the chart alone.

What if my weight falls between two heights on a chart?

Use interpolation — estimate between the two nearest heights. Better yet, use our free BMI calculator on this page, which works for any exact height and gives you your precise healthy weight range in both kg and stone.

Should I aim for the bottom or top of my healthy weight range?

Both are healthy. Where you sit within the range depends on genetics, frame size, and muscle mass. Your GP can discuss what's realistic and healthy for you individually rather than targeting a specific number.

Where can I get support if I want to manage my weight?

Start with your GP, who can refer you to NHS weight management services (Tier 3). Many areas also offer digital programmes and community support. If you have excess weight with health conditions, prescription treatments may be available following a clinical assessment.
