Weight by Height Chart — What's Healthy for Your Height
A weight by height chart helps you understand whether your weight falls within a healthy range for your specific height. In the UK, we use NHS guidance based on BMI (body mass index) to determine healthy weight ranges, which vary depending on age, sex, ethnicity, and overall health. This guide explains how to find your healthy weight using UK measurements and provides context for weight management. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal healthy weight range instantly.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
NHS Healthy Weight Ranges by Height
The NHS defines a healthy BMI as 18.5 to 24.9 for most UK adults. Your healthy weight range depends on your height — taller people naturally weigh more. For example, at 5ft 5in (165cm), a healthy weight is approximately 7st 8lbs to 10st 2lbs (48–65kg). At 5ft 10in (178cm), the healthy range is roughly 9st 4lbs to 12st 7lbs (59–80kg). These ranges are calculated using the BMI formula: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Important note: for adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds — healthy BMI starts at 18.5 and goes up to 22.9 rather than 24.9. This is because these groups face higher cardiovascular risk at the same BMI levels. Your GP can provide personalised guidance based on your individual health context.

Using the Chart — UK Context and Tools
A weight by height chart is a useful screening tool, but it has limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, and doesn't account for where fat is stored. The NHS recommends using waist circumference alongside BMI for a fuller picture: men should aim for under 94cm (37in), women under 80cm (31.5in). Use our free weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and lbs easily. If you're concerned about your weight or want to understand your healthy range better, your GP can offer personalised advice and, if appropriate, discuss weight management support. Even modest weight loss of 5–10% can improve health markers like blood pressure and blood sugar control.

How We Built These Tools
Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.
All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.
We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is the healthy weight range for 5ft 8in?
At 5ft 8in (173cm), a healthy BMI range of 18.5–24.9 gives a weight range of approximately 8st 9lbs to 11st 8lbs (55–74kg). For South Asian or other heritage groups with adjusted thresholds, the upper limit would be lower at around 10st 6lbs (66kg). Your GP can confirm what's appropriate for your individual health.
How do I calculate my healthy weight from height?
Multiply your height in metres by itself, then multiply by 18.5 for the lower bound and 24.9 for the upper bound. For example, at 1.75m: lower = 18.5 × 3.06 = 56.6kg; upper = 24.9 × 3.06 = 76.2kg. Use our BMI calculator above for gradual improvement.
Is a weight by height chart accurate for everyone?
Charts are useful screening tools but have limitations. They don't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution. Athletes may have high BMI despite low body fat. Waist measurement and overall health markers matter too. Your GP can interpret your results in context.
What if my weight is above the healthy range for my height?
Being above the healthy range may increase health risks, but NHS guidance emphasises sustainable approaches. Even 5–clinically studied weight loss can improve blood pressure and blood sugar. Your GP can discuss options including lifestyle changes, dietary support, or weight management programmes through the NHS.
Do healthy weight ranges differ by age or sex?
BMI thresholds are the same for men and women, but fat distribution and muscle mass differ naturally. Older adults may lose muscle, which BMI doesn't capture. Ethnicity affects risk thresholds — South Asian and other heritage groups have lower healthy BMI ranges. Your GP can advise on what's healthy for you specifically.
