What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How to Calculate Healthy Weight From Your Height

Your healthy weight depends on your height. The NHS uses BMI (body mass index) to define healthy weight ranges, and this is calculated using your height and weight together. The simplest method is to use the BMI formula: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 according to NHS guidelines.

To find your healthy weight range from your height, you can work backwards from these BMI thresholds:

  • Lower healthy weight: 18.5 × height(m)² = minimum healthy weight in kg
  • Upper healthy weight: 24.9 × height(m)² = maximum healthy weight in kg

For example, if you are 1.73m tall (5ft 8in), your healthy weight range is approximately 55.4 kg (8st 10lbs) to 74.5 kg (11st 10lbs). Use our weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and pounds for UK measurements. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds — a healthy BMI starts at 18.5 but upper limit is 22.9 rather than 24.9.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the average healthy weight for a UK adult of my height?

Average healthy weight varies widely by height. For a 5ft 8in adult (1.73m), the healthy range is roughly 55–75 kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs). For a 5ft 4in adult (1.63m), it's roughly 50–65 kg (7st 12lbs to 10st 3lbs). Use our BMI calculator to find your specific range based on your exact height.

Is there a weight calculator that works for UK stone and pounds?

Yes. MyWeightCheck's weight calculator above works in both metric (kg) and imperial (stone and pounds). Simply enter your height and weight in your preferred measurement, and it calculates your BMI and healthy weight range instantly. You can also use our separate weight converter to translate between units.

Can I use height and weight calculators to manage weight loss?

Yes. A weight calculator helps you set realistic targets and track progress toward your healthy weight range. For sustainable weight loss, combine it with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. If you are interested in weight loss support, your GP can advise on NHS options or referral to specialist weight management services.

Does healthy weight change based on age or ethnicity?

BMI categories are the same across all ages for adults. However, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage due to higher health risks at the same BMI. Elderly adults may need individual assessment as muscle mass naturally decreases with age.

How often should I recalculate my healthy weight range?

Your healthy weight range does not change unless your height changes (which is rare in adults). Recalculate your BMI regularly to monitor your weight and progress toward your target. Many people track monthly or quarterly to stay motivated and catch any significant changes early.
