Weight Chart for UK Adults — Understanding Healthy Weight Ranges

A weight chart helps you understand where your current weight sits within NHS health guidelines and what constitutes a healthy weight for your height. Unlike generic charts, UK weight charts account for stone and pounds alongside kilograms, and may reference ethnicity-adjusted thresholds for certain populations. Whether you're tracking your weight management journey or simply want to understand your health context, a properly calibrated chart provides essential reference points. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal BMI instantly and see exactly where you fall on the health spectrum.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

NHS Weight Categories and What They Mean

The NHS defines five weight categories based on Body Mass Index (BMI), which divides your weight by your height squared. A healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9. From 25.0 to 29.9, you're in the overweight range; from 30.0 onwards, BMI enters obesity classifications (Class I at 30–34.9, Class II at 35–39.9, and Class III at 40 and above).

For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds: a healthy BMI is 18.5–22.9, with overweight starting at 23.0. This reflects evidence that these populations face higher cardiovascular and metabolic risks at lower BMI levels.

These categories are screening tools, not diagnosis. Your GP can help interpret what your weight means for your individual health, considering factors like muscle mass, medical history, and where body fat is distributed. Use our weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and pounds, then calculate your BMI to see your personal category.

Using a Weight Chart for Weight Management

A weight chart serves as a practical reference during weight loss or weight maintenance. Many people find it helpful to log their weight weekly on a chart, tracking progress over months rather than days—sustainable change is typically 0.5–1 kg per week according to NHS guidance.

If you're considering weight management options, a weight chart provides a baseline. For adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 25–29.9 with weight-related health conditions like type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure, prescription options like GLP-1 medications may be relevant. Our GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help you understand potential outcomes. Keep your chart accessible, review it monthly, and discuss any significant changes with your GP as part of your overall health strategy.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's the difference between a UK weight chart and other weight charts?

UK weight charts use stone and pounds as primary units (alongside kg), align with NHS BMI thresholds, and may reference ethnicity-adjusted categories. US and European charts typically use different units and different health organisation guidelines. Always use UK-specific guidance for NHS health advice context.

How do I know if I'm on a healthy weight chart?

Cross-reference your height and weight against NHS BMI categories. A healthy BMI is 18.5–24.9 for most adults, or 18.5–22.9 for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults. Your GP can confirm whether a particular chart is appropriate for your situation.

Can weight charts account for muscle mass?

Standard weight charts use BMI, which doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. If you're very muscular or athletic, your BMI may be higher despite low body fat. Discuss this with your GP—they may recommend additional measurements like waist circumference or body composition analysis.

Should I use a weight chart if I'm pregnant?

Standard BMI charts are not appropriate during pregnancy. The NHS provides pregnancy-specific guidance. Always discuss your weight and health with your GP or midwife during pregnancy rather than relying on a standard weight chart.

How often should I update my weight chart?

Weekly weighing is common for tracking, but avoid obsessive daily checking—weight fluctuates naturally due to water retention, food, and hormones. Review your overall trend monthly. Our free progress tracker makes logging easy and helps you visualize long-term patterns.
