UK Weight Chart — Find Your Healthy Weight Range

A weight chart helps you understand whether your current weight falls within a healthy range for your height. In the UK, we typically measure weight in stone and pounds, though healthcare professionals use kilograms. Using NHS guidance, a healthy weight is determined by your BMI (body mass index), which takes both weight and height into account. This guide explains how weight charts work, what they mean, and how to use them alongside other health measures to support your weight management journey.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Understanding UK Weight Charts and Healthy Weight Ranges

Weight charts are visual tools that show the healthy weight range for a given height. In the UK, the NHS uses BMI categories to define healthy weight ranges, which apply to adults aged 18 and over. A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, while a BMI of 25–29.9 is classified as overweight, and 30 or above is obese.

For an adult who is 5ft 8in (173cm) tall, the healthy weight range is approximately 55–74 kg (8st 9lbs to 11st 8lbs). However, these ranges can vary based on factors like muscle mass, bone density, and overall fitness. It's important to remember that BMI is a screening tool — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so your GP can provide more personalised guidance about what a healthy weight means for you specifically.

  • Healthy BMI: 18.5–24.9 kg/m²
  • Overweight: 25–29.9 kg/m²
  • Obese: 30+ kg/m²

For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends slightly lower thresholds, as these groups face higher health risks at lower BMI levels.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What does a healthy weight chart tell me?

A healthy weight chart shows the weight range that is considered healthy for your height, based on BMI. It helps you understand whether your current weight carries health risks or falls within a healthy range. However, charts don't account for muscle mass, bone density, or individual health factors — your GP can provide more personalised guidance.

How do I calculate my healthy weight range?

Multiply your height in metres by itself, then multiply by 18.5 (lower limit) and 24.9 (upper limit). For example, at 1.73m: 1.73² = 2.99; 2.99 × 18.5 = 55.4 kg; 2.99 × 24.9 = 74.5 kg. This gives a healthy range of 55–74 kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs). Use our BMI calculator for gradual improvement.

Does a healthy weight chart apply to everyone?

Standard UK weight charts apply to adults aged 18 and over. Children use different age- and sex-specific centile charts. Adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage should use lower BMI thresholds. Pregnant women and very muscular individuals (athletes) may need personalised guidance from their GP.

What if my weight is above the healthy range shown on a chart?

Being above the healthy weight range increases health risks including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, losing even 5–10% of your body weight can significantly improve your health. Speak to your GP about weight management support, which may include lifestyle changes, structured programmes, or prescription medication if appropriate.

Are UK weight charts different from charts used in other countries?

Yes. UK weight charts typically use stone and pounds for personal measurement, though the NHS uses kg clinically. The BMI categories are internationally recognised but may vary slightly by country. Always use UK NHS guidelines (BMI 18.5–24.9 as healthy) when assessing your weight in a UK context.
