What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How to Calculate Your Healthy Weight Range

Your healthy weight depends on your height and is measured using BMI (body mass index). The NHS defines a healthy BMI as between 18.5 and 24.9 for most adults, though lower thresholds apply to those of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage. To find your healthy weight range, use this formula: multiply your height in metres by itself, then divide your target BMI by this number. For example, if you're 1.73m tall (5ft 8in), a healthy weight range is approximately 55–74 kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs).

Our free BMI calculator above does this instantly — simply enter your height and current weight to see where you fall on the healthy weight scale. You can also use our weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and pounds, making it easier to understand your numbers in whichever measurement you prefer.

Using Weight Management Tools for Your Journey

Finding your healthy weight is just the starting point. Once you know your target range, tracking progress becomes much easier. Our free progress tracker lets you log your weight over weeks and months, helping you stay motivated and see trends in your weight management journey. Many people also find it helpful to track alongside other changes — diet, activity levels, or health markers like blood pressure.

If you're considering prescription weight loss medication such as Mounjaro or Wegovy, our GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help you estimate potential weight loss at different doses, based on clinical trial data. This gives you a realistic picture of what to expect alongside lifestyle changes.

Remember that healthy weight is individual — genetics, muscle mass, age, and overall health all play a role. Your GP can provide personalised advice about what a healthy weight means for you specifically, especially if you have existing health conditions. The NHS recommends losing weight gradually at around 0.5–1 kg per week for sustainable results. Focus on steady progress rather than gradual weight management, and consider working with your GP or a registered dietitian to create a plan that works for your lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What weight should I aim for based on my height?

Your healthy weight range is based on your height and BMI. The NHS defines healthy BMI as 18.5–24.9, which varies significantly by height. Use our free BMI calculator above to enter your height and see your personal healthy weight range in stone, pounds, or kilograms. For example, at 5ft 8in, healthy weight is roughly 8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs.

Is there a formula I can use to find my healthy weight?

Yes. Healthy weight range = your height (m)² × 18.5 to 24.9. For instance, if you're 1.73m tall: 1.73² = 2.99, then 2.99 × 18.5 = 55kg and 2.99 × 24.9 = 74kg. Your healthy range is 55–74kg. Our weight converter and BMI calculator make this calculation instant and accurate.

Does healthy weight differ by age, gender, or ethnicity?

BMI thresholds are the same for adult men and women, but people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage have higher health risks at lower BMI levels. The NHS recommends lower thresholds for these groups — starting at BMI 23 for overweight. Age affects muscle mass, so older adults may benefit from discussing healthy weight with their GP.

How quickly should I aim to reach my healthy weight?

The NHS recommends losing weight at 0.5–1 kg per week for sustainable, healthy results. This typically requires a calorie deficit of around 500 kcal daily. Faster weight loss can lead to muscle loss and nutritional deficiency. If you're considering prescription weight loss support, discuss a realistic timeline with your GP or prescriber.

Can weight finder tools account for muscle mass?

BMI-based healthy weight ranges don't distinguish between muscle and fat, so very muscular individuals may have a high BMI despite low body fat. Waist circumference is a helpful additional measure — the NHS recommends under 94cm for men and 80cm for women as healthier thresholds. Your GP can assess your overall health picture beyond weight alone.
