Weight For Height Calculator — UK Health Guide
A weight for height calculator helps you understand whether your weight is healthy for your height according to NHS guidelines. In the UK, we use BMI (Body Mass Index) alongside other measurements to assess whether weight falls within a healthy range. This guide explains how to calculate healthy weight for your height, what the NHS recommends, and how to use free health tools to track your personal weight and health context. Whether you're checking your current weight or planning changes, understanding the relationship between height and weight is the first step towards informed health decisions.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
How to Calculate Healthy Weight For Your Height
The NHS uses BMI (Body Mass Index) as the primary screening tool for healthy weight. BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. A healthy BMI range is 18.5 to 24.9 for most adults according to NHS guidance.
To find your healthy weight range for a given height, use these formulas:
- Lower bound: 18.5 × height (m)²
- Upper bound: 24.9 × height (m)²
For example, an adult who is 1.73m tall (5ft 8in) has a healthy weight range of approximately 55.4 kg to 74.5 kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs). Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal healthy weight range instantly — simply enter your height and weight, and the calculator shows your BMI category and where you sit relative to NHS thresholds.

UK-Specific Weight Guidance and Ethnicity Adjustments
The NHS recognises that different ethnic groups face different health risks at the same BMI level. If you are of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean descent, the NHS recommends lower thresholds: a healthy BMI for you may be 18.5 to 22.9 rather than 18.5 to 24.9. This is because these groups have higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower weights.
Beyond BMI, the NHS also recommends measuring waist circumference. For men, a waist over 94cm (37 inches) indicates increased risk; over 102cm (40 inches) indicates high risk. For women, over 80cm (31.5 inches) indicates increased risk; over 88cm (34.5 inches) indicates high risk. A healthy waist-to-height ratio is below 0.5 for all adults. These measurements together give a fuller picture of health than weight alone.
If you're concerned about your weight or want personalised guidance, speak to your GP. They can assess your individual health context, discuss any weight-related health conditions you may have, and recommend appropriate support. The NHS offers free resources including the NHS Weight Loss Plan, community weight management programmes, and referral to specialist services if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is the healthy weight range for my height in the UK?
Use the BMI formula: healthy weight is between 18.5 and 24.9 × your height in metres squared. For example, at 1.73m tall, healthy weight is 55–74kg (8st 10lbs–11st 10lbs). Lower thresholds apply if you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage. Use our BMI calculator above for your personal range.
Why does the NHS recommend different weights for different ethnicities?
Research shows that South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean populations have higher cardiovascular and diabetes risk at the same BMI as other groups. The NHS recommends a BMI of 18.5–22.9 for these groups instead of 18.5–24.9, ensuring more appropriate health screening and early intervention.
Is weight the only measure of health related to my height?
No. The NHS recommends also measuring waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio. A healthy waist-to-height ratio is below 0.5 for all adults. BMI also has limitations — it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes may have a high BMI but low body fat. Your GP can give personalised advice.
How do I convert my weight to find the healthy range in stone and pounds?
Use our free weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and pounds instantly. Once converted, compare your weight to the healthy range for your height. For example, 70kg equals 11 stone 0.1lbs. The BMI calculator also shows healthy ranges in both metric and imperial units.
What should I do if my weight is outside the healthy range for my height?
Speak to your GP who can assess your individual situation, discuss any health conditions, and recommend appropriate support — whether that's the NHS Weight Loss Plan, community programmes, or referral to specialist weight management services. Even losing 5–10% of your body weight can have health benefits.
