Weight for Height Chart — Find Your Healthy Range

A weight for height chart helps you understand whether your current weight falls within a healthy range for your height. In the UK, the NHS uses BMI (body mass index) as the primary screening tool to assess whether weight is healthy for a given height. However, your ideal weight depends on several factors including age, muscle mass, bone density, and overall fitness. This guide explains how to use a weight for height chart, what the ranges mean, and why NHS guidance is important for your health.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Understanding Weight for Height Charts and NHS Categories

A weight for height chart shows the relationship between your height and weight, placing you into health categories based on BMI. According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 for most UK adults. However, the healthy weight range varies significantly depending on your height. For example, at 5ft 5in (165cm), a healthy weight falls between approximately 50kg and 68kg (7st 12lbs to 10st 10lbs). At 6ft 0in (183cm), the healthy range is roughly 56kg to 76kg (8st 12lbs to 11st 13lbs).

The NHS recognises that weight for height charts have limitations. They do not account for muscle mass (athletes may have a high BMI but low body fat), age-related changes, or pregnancy. Additionally, for adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds because these groups face higher health risks at the same weight as other populations. NHS Weight Categories and How to Use Them

The NHS divides adults into five BMI categories: underweight (BMI below 18.5), healthy weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9), obese (30–34.9), and severely obese (40+). To find where you fall, calculate your BMI using your height and weight, then compare against these ranges. You can also use our free weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and pounds, making it easier to understand your weight in familiar UK measurements.

Your healthy weight range depends on your individual circumstances. Age, fitness level, medical conditions, and family history all play a role. Rather than aiming for a single number, focus on maintaining a weight within the healthy BMI range that feels sustainable and supports good energy levels. Your GP can provide personalised advice about what a healthy weight means for your specific health situation.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the healthy weight range for my height?

Healthy weight ranges vary by height. Use the NHS BMI formula: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is healthy for most UK adults. At 5ft 6in (168cm), healthy weight is roughly 50–70kg (7st 12lbs–11st 0lbs). Use our BMI calculator above to find your exact range instantly.

Why do weight for height charts use BMI?

BMI is a simple, evidence-based screening tool used by the NHS because it accounts for both height and weight in one number. However, BMI has limitations — it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. Always combine BMI with other health measures like waist circumference and fitness level.

Are weight for height charts different for men and women?

No, BMI categories are the same for men and women. However, healthy body fat percentages differ between sexes. Men typically have lower body fat percentages than women at the same BMI. Your GP can advise on what's healthy for your individual circumstances.

What if my weight is above the healthy range?

If your weight is above the healthy range, even a 5–10% reduction can improve health outcomes like blood pressure and blood sugar. Start with small, sustainable dietary changes and increased physical activity. Your GP can discuss weight management options including lifestyle support or, where appropriate, prescription treatments.

Does ethnicity affect healthy weight for height?

Yes. The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults because these groups face higher health risks at lower BMI levels. If you're from these backgrounds, a healthy BMI may start at 18.5–22.9 rather than 18.5–24.9. Discuss with your GP for personalised guidance.
