Weight Height Chart — Find Your Healthy Weight Range

A weight height chart helps you understand if your weight is healthy for your height. In the UK, the NHS uses BMI (body mass index) to assess whether an adult's weight falls within a healthy range. Your height and weight together determine your BMI, which is a useful screening tool — though it has limitations and doesn't account for muscle mass or where fat is stored. This guide explains how height and weight relate to health, includes reference data, and shows you how to find your personal healthy weight range using NHS standards.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Understanding Height and Weight Relationships

Your healthy weight depends on your height. Taller people naturally weigh more than shorter people while maintaining the same BMI. The NHS uses a simple formula: divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For example, an adult who is 1.70m (5ft 7in) tall with a healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9 should weigh between approximately 53kg (8st 5lbs) and 71kg (11st 2lbs).

Height-to-weight ratios vary significantly between individuals due to factors like frame size, muscle mass, and bone density. This is why a weight height chart shows a range rather than a single "ideal" weight. Use our free weight converter above to translate between kg, stone, and pounds, and our BMI calculator to find your personal BMI instantly based on your exact height and weight.

  • Taller adults require higher absolute weights to achieve the same BMI
  • A healthy BMI is 18.5–24.9 for most UK adults
  • Lower thresholds apply for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults

Using a Weight Height Chart for Health Planning

A weight height chart is a practical tool for health management and weight tracking. Rather than targeting a specific weight, focus on achieving a healthy BMI range for your height — this is more accurate and sustainable. If you're working on weight management, even modest losses of 5–10% of your body weight bring measurable health benefits including improved blood pressure, better blood sugar control, and reduced joint strain.

For long-term health planning, consider using our free progress tracker to log changes over time. Your GP can provide personalised guidance about what a healthy weight means for your individual health status, especially if you have underlying health conditions. Weight charts are informational guides, not medical prescriptions.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is a healthy weight for my height?

Use the NHS BMI calculation: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². A healthy BMI is 18.5–24.9 for most UK adults. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults, lower thresholds apply (18.5–22.9). Our free BMI calculator above shows your personal range instantly based on your height.

How do I convert my weight to find my healthy range?

Use our free weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and pounds. Once you have your weight in kilograms and your height in metres, calculate BMI using the formula: weight ÷ (height)². Multiply your height in metres by itself first, then divide your weight by that number.

Does muscle mass affect weight height charts?

Yes — BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. Athletes may have a high BMI but low body fat. Charts show general population ranges. Waist circumference is also important: men over 94cm (37in) and women over 80cm (31.5in) have increased health risk. Your GP can assess your individual body composition.

What if my weight is above the healthy range for my height?

Even a 5–clinically studied weight loss brings meaningful health benefits. The NHS recommends losing 0.5–1kg per week through sustainable changes. Speak to your GP about weight management support available in your area, including tier 3 specialist services or lifestyle programmes.

Are weight height charts the same in the UK as other countries?

No — the UK uses stone and pounds; most of Europe uses kilograms. BMI thresholds are the same, but UK health services use different measurement units. MyWeightCheck is built specifically for UK adults using NHS guidelines and British measurements.
