What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

UK-Licensed Weight Loss Medications

Three prescription-only medications are currently licensed in the UK for weight management and may be relevant if you're seeking additional support after tummy tuck surgery:

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) — A once-weekly GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist injection. Clinical trials showed participants lost an average of 15–21% of their body weight over 72 weeks, though individual results vary significantly.
  • Wegovy (semaglutide) — A once-weekly GLP-1 injection. In clinical trials, participants using Wegovy lost approximately 14.9% of their body weight on average alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
  • Saxenda (liraglutide) — A daily GLP-1 injection offering similar mechanisms to Wegovy. All these medications require a prescription and clinical assessment to determine eligibility.

These medications work by helping to reduce appetite and support feeling fuller after smaller meals. Each works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity — they are not replacements for lifestyle changes. Your prescriber will assess which option suits your individual health profile.

NHS Access vs Private Prescription

Access to weight loss medication in the UK differs depending on your route. NHS access: Weight loss medications are available through specialist tier 3 weight management services, typically following a GP referral. Availability varies significantly by region, and waiting lists can be lengthy in some areas. Your GP can discuss whether referral to a specialist service is appropriate for you.

Private access: You can obtain a prescription through a registered online prescriber following a clinical assessment, without NHS referral. This route is faster but involves private costs. Either route requires eligibility assessment based on BMI and health factors. Use our free BMI calculator to check your starting point, and discuss your options with your GP — they know your full medical history, including your tummy tuck recovery status.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Am I eligible for weight loss medication after a tummy tuck?

Eligibility is based on BMI and health factors, not on surgical history. Adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with weight-related health conditions (like high blood pressure or prediabetes), may be eligible. Your GP or a licensed prescriber will assess your individual situation, including recovery from surgery, before recommending treatment.

Can I take weight loss injections while recovering from tummy tuck surgery?

Recovery timelines vary, and you should not start any new medication without consulting your surgeon and GP together. Most GPs recommend waiting until you are fully healed and cleared by your surgeon. Be honest with your prescriber about your recent surgery — they need this information to assess suitability and timing.

How long does weight loss medication take to work?

Most people notice appetite changes within 1–2 weeks, but significant weight loss typically appears after 4–8 weeks of treatment. Weight loss is gradual and sustainable — the NHS recommends expecting 0.5–1 kg loss per week. Use our GLP-1 weight loss calculator to see projected results at different doses based on clinical trial data.

Will weight loss medication help if I've had loose skin removed?

Tummy tucks remove excess skin, so weight loss medication won't affect that surgical result. However, if you're planning to lose additional weight after surgery, medication may help stabilise your weight long-term. Your surgeon can advise whether further weight loss is beneficial for your overall appearance and health.

What's the difference between NHS and private weight loss medication?

The medications available are the same — Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Saxenda are licensed on both NHS and private routes. The main differences are waiting times (NHS can be months; private is faster), costs (NHS is free; private has fees), and referral requirements (NHS usually requires GP referral; private does not). Speak to your GP about both options.
