What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

UK-Licensed Weight Loss Injections and Eligibility

Three prescription weight loss injections are currently licensed in the UK:

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) — a once-weekly dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. Clinical trials showed average weight loss of 15–21% of body weight. Maximum dose is 15 mg per week.
  • Wegovy (semaglutide) — a once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist. Clinical trials demonstrated average weight loss of around 15% of body weight. Maximum dose is 2.4 mg per week.
  • Saxenda (liraglutide) — a once-daily GLP-1 receptor agonist. Dose range 0.6–3 mg daily.

To be eligible for prescription weight loss treatment in the UK, you typically need a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with weight-related health conditions (such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea). Lower thresholds apply if you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage. All these medications require a prescription and clinical assessment before being dispensed.

NHS vs Private Access — How to Get Started

NHS access: You can ask your GP about weight loss medication. If eligible, you'll typically be referred to a specialist tier 3 weight management service in your local area. NHS availability and waiting times vary significantly by region. Some areas have shorter waiting lists than others.

Private access: You can access weight loss injections through a private online consultation with a UK-licensed prescriber, followed by dispensing from a GPhC-registered pharmacy. This route doesn't require an NHS referral and can be faster, though there is a cost.

Whichever route you choose, a qualified prescriber will assess your individual health to determine which medication—if any—is appropriate for you. Weight loss injections work best alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Use our free GLP-1 weight loss calculator to explore potential outcomes, and our BMI calculator to check where you currently stand against NHS weight thresholds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the difference between Mounjaro and Wegovy?

Both are once-weekly injections for weight management, but Mounjaro is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, while Wegovy is a GLP-1 agonist only. Mounjaro showed slightly higher average weight loss in clinical trials (15–21% vs 15%), but individual results vary. A prescriber will assess which is more suitable for you based on your health profile.

Am I eligible for weight loss injections on the NHS in Hull?

You may be eligible if you have a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with weight-related health conditions. Speak to your GP about referral to your local specialist weight management service. NHS eligibility is assessed individually. Waiting times vary by region, so contact your GP practice for local information.

How quickly do weight loss injections work?

Weight loss typically begins within a few weeks, with most significant loss occurring between weeks 12 and 68 of treatment. However, individual results vary considerably. Dosing is gradual—you start on a low dose and increase every 4 weeks. Sustainable weight loss alongside lifestyle changes produces the best long-term outcomes.

What are the most common side effects of weight loss injections?

The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, and constipation. These tend to improve over time as your body adjusts. Less common side effects include headache, fatigue, and injection site reactions. Always discuss potential side effects with your prescriber before starting.

Can I get weight loss injections privately in Hull if I'm not eligible for NHS treatment?

Yes. Private prescribers can assess you independently and prescribe weight loss injections if clinically appropriate, regardless of NHS eligibility criteria. Private prescriptions are dispensed by registered pharmacies. Costs vary by dose and provider but typically range from £129–£320 per month.
