What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

UK-Licensed Weight Loss Medication Options

For adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27–29.9 with weight-related health conditions, prescription weight loss medications are available in the UK. Three medications are currently licensed for weight management:

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) — a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist. Clinical trials showed average weight loss of approximately 15–21% body weight over 72 weeks at the maximum 15 mg dose, alongside diet and exercise.
  • Wegovy (semaglutide) — a GLP-1 receptor agonist. STEP-1 trial data showed average weight loss of approximately 14.9% body weight at 68 weeks on the maximum 2.4 mg dose.
  • Saxenda (liraglutide) — a once-daily GLP-1 injection. Average weight loss is typically 5–10% body weight over 52 weeks.

Individual results vary significantly. All three are prescription-only and require a clinical assessment before being prescribed. Your GP can discuss which option, if any, may be appropriate for your circumstances.

NHS vs Private Access — How to Get Started

NHS access: Weight loss medication is available through NHS specialist tier 3 weight management services. You'll need a GP referral. Availability varies significantly by region, and waiting lists can be lengthy. Contact your GP practice to ask about local specialist services.

Private access: Available through GPhC-registered online prescribers following a clinical assessment. This route doesn't require NHS referral and can be faster. Always ensure the prescriber is UK-licensed.

Your weekly tracker becomes more powerful when combined with professional support. Whether you choose NHS or private care, consistent weekly monitoring helps you and your healthcare provider assess whether your chosen approach is working and make adjustments if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What should I record in my weekly weight loss tracker?

Record your weight at the same day and time each week (typically a Monday morning). Note any significant factors affecting that week: diet changes, medication dose changes, illness, or increased exercise. Weight naturally fluctuates 1–2 kg daily due to water retention, hormones, and food intake. Weekly tracking smooths these fluctuations and shows true progress.

How quickly should I expect to lose weight with prescription medication?

The NHS recommends sustainable weight loss of 0.5–1 kg per week. With prescription GLP-1 medication like Mounjaro or Wegovy, clinical trials show average weight loss of 15–21% body weight over several months, though individual results vary significantly. Your weekly tracker will show when you reach a stable pattern, typically weeks 4–8 into treatment.

Can I use a weight tracker alongside GLP-1 medication?

Yes. In fact, tracking your weight weekly while using glp-1 weight loss medication helps you monitor effectiveness and identify any side effects affecting appetite or digestion. Use our free progress tracker on this page to log weekly results and spot patterns. Share your tracking data with your GP or prescriber at follow-up appointments.

What's the difference between daily and weekly weigh-ins?

Daily weigh-ins can be demoralising because weight fluctuates naturally by 1–2 kg due to water, food, and hormones. Weekly weigh-ins at the same time give a clearer picture of actual fat loss. The NHS recommends weekly weigh-ins as part of weight management uk programmes for this reason. Monthly tracking can miss important changes.

What should I do if my weekly weight loss stops?

A plateau is normal and usually temporary. It can last 1–3 weeks. Ensure you're maintaining a calorie deficit through diet and activity. If you're on prescription medication, discuss the plateau with your GP or prescriber—dose adjustments or lifestyle tweaks may help. Use our BMI calculator and weight converter to track changes in proportion to your health range, not just the number.
