Weight Table According to Height and Age — UK Guide

There's no single "ideal" weight that applies to everyone at a given height and age — healthy weight depends on factors like muscle mass, bone density, and individual health. However, NHS guidance provides healthy weight ranges based on height using BMI (Body Mass Index), which applies to most UK adults aged 18–65. We'll show you how to find your healthy weight range and explain why age and body composition matter more than a single target number.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

UK Healthy Weight Ranges by Height

The NHS uses BMI (Body Mass Index) to define healthy weight ranges. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for most UK adults. You can calculate your healthy weight range for any height using this formula: multiply your height in metres by itself, then multiply by 18.5 and 24.9 to get the lower and upper healthy weight bounds in kilograms.

Here are healthy weight ranges for common UK heights (using metric and imperial measurements):

  • 5ft 3in (160cm): 47–63 kg (7st 6lbs–9st 13lbs)
  • 5ft 6in (168cm): 52–70 kg (8st 2lbs–11st 0lbs)
  • 5ft 9in (175cm): 56–76 kg (8st 12lbs–11st 13lbs)
  • 5ft 11in (180cm): 60–81 kg (9st 6lbs–12st 11lbs)

Use our free weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and pounds instantly. These ranges apply to adults aged 18–65 with typical body composition; athletes or highly muscular individuals may have a higher healthy weight.

Age, Body Composition, and Individual Variation

Weight recommendations don't change significantly with age — a 30-year-old and a 60-year-old of the same height and BMI have similar health risk profiles according to NHS guidance. However, how you carry your weight matters more than the number on the scales. Waist circumference is a better predictor of health risk than weight alone: men should aim for under 94cm (37in), and women under 80cm (31.5in).

Age does affect metabolism, muscle mass naturally declines with age (sarcopenia), and body composition changes — so two people at the same weight may have very different proportions of muscle versus fat. How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is there a different healthy weight for older adults (65+)?

Not officially — NHS BMI categories remain the same for adults over 65. However, older adults lose muscle mass naturally, so a higher weight at the same BMI may include more fat. Your GP can assess whether your weight is healthy for your individual circumstances, considering muscle mass and overall health.

Why does the table show a range rather than a single ideal weight?

Healthy weight is a range because people have different bone density, muscle mass, and frame size. Two people at 5ft 8in may both be healthy at different weights depending on whether they're athletic or sedentary. BMI provides a useful screening range; your GP can personalise advice further.

Does this weight table apply to pregnant women?

No — BMI categories do not apply during pregnancy. The NHS recommends pregnant women focus on appropriate weight gain rather than targeting a BMI range. Speak to your midwife or GP about healthy weight gain during pregnancy specific to your circumstances.

What if my weight is in the healthy range but I feel unhealthy?

Weight is just one health marker. Even at a healthy BMI, factors like fitness level, diet quality, stress, sleep, and medical conditions affect health. Your GP can assess your overall health picture, not just your weight. Consider booking a health check with your practice.

Can I use this table to set a weight loss goal?

Yes — use the healthy weight range for your height as a starting point. If you're currently above this range, aiming for the upper end (BMI 24.9) is a realistic first goal. Aim to lose 0.5–1 kg per week for sustainable results. Your GP or a specialist weight management service can help you set personalised goals.
