Weight With Height Calculator — Find Your Healthy Range

Understanding the relationship between your weight and height is the foundation of healthy weight management. A weight with height calculator helps you determine whether your current weight is in a healthy range for your specific height, and provides context using your BMI (body mass index). In the UK, we use NHS guidance to assess healthy weight, which considers both your weight and height together. Use our free BMI calculator above to instantly find your healthy weight range — it's the quickest way to get personalised insight into your weight management status.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How Weight and Height Relate to Health

Your weight in isolation means very little — what matters is how your weight relates to your height. This is where BMI (body mass index) comes in. BMI is a ratio that divides your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared, creating a single number that's comparable across all adults.

According to NHS guidance, a healthy BMI for most UK adults falls between 18.5 and 24.9. However, for adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds starting at 18.5 to 22.9, as these groups face higher health risks at lower weights.

  • BMI 18.5–24.9: Healthy weight
  • BMI 25–29.9: Overweight
  • BMI 30+: Obese

Even small differences in height can significantly affect what weight is healthy for you. For example, a weight of 70kg is healthy for someone 5'9" but overweight for someone 5'2". This is why personalised calculation is essential.

Using Height and Weight for Weight Management

When managing your weight, height-adjusted targets matter far more than arbitrary numbers. Use our free weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and pounds — UK measurements make health tracking clearer. Once you know your current BMI, you can set realistic goals: most NHS guidance suggests aiming for a BMI under 25 for sustainable health benefits.

If you're considering weight management support, your GP or a prescriber will assess your BMI alongside your height to determine eligibility for lifestyle interventions or prescription medication. Evidence shows that even a 5–10% reduction in body weight — calculated from your current height and weight baseline — can meaningfully improve blood pressure, blood sugar control, and cardiovascular health. Track your progress using our free progress tracker to monitor changes over time.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's the difference between BMI and just weighing myself?

Weight alone doesn't account for your height — two people at 80kg can have very different health profiles depending on whether they're 5'4" or 6'2". BMI combines weight and height into a single comparable number. It's a screening tool, not perfect, but it helps identify whether your weight is in a healthy range for your specific height.

How do I calculate my healthy weight range for my height?

Multiply your height in metres by itself, then multiply by 18.5 (lower bound) and 24.9 (upper bound). For example, at 1.70m: 18.5 × 2.89 = 53.5kg (lower) and 24.9 × 2.89 = 71.9kg (upper). Our free BMI calculator does this instantly — just enter your height and weight above.

Does height affect how much weight I should lose?

Absolutely. Your healthy weight range is determined by your height, so your weight loss goal should be based on your personal BMI target, not a generic number. A GP or weight management specialist can help set realistic height-specific goals based on your current measurements.

Are there different healthy weight ranges for different ethnicities?

Yes. The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults due to higher cardiovascular risk at lower weights. If this applies to you, discuss personalised targets with your GP to ensure your health goals are appropriate for your background.

Can I use a height and weight calculator if I'm very tall or very short?

BMI works across all adult heights, though it may be less accurate at extremes. Very tall or very muscular individuals might have a high BMI but low body fat. Your GP can advise whether BMI is the right tool for you, or whether other measurements like waist circumference are more useful.
