What Is A Normal BMI For Men?

A normal or healthy BMI for men in the UK is between 18.5 and 24.9, according to NHS guidelines. This range applies to adult men of all heights — what matters is the relationship between your weight and height. If your BMI falls outside this range, it doesn't necessarily mean you're unhealthy, but it does indicate whether your weight sits at a level associated with lower health risks. You can calculate your personal BMI using our free BMI calculator above, or read on to understand the ranges, how BMI is calculated, and what the numbers mean for men in the UK.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Understanding BMI Categories For Men

The NHS BMI categories divide adult men into five health-related weight groups. A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 — this is the range where men typically face the lowest risk of weight-related health conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Below 18.5 is classified as underweight, which may indicate insufficient body mass. A BMI of 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight — still relatively common, but health risks begin to increase. Obesity starts at BMI 30, with further subdivisions: Class I (30–34.9), Class II (35–39.9), and Class III (40+), where health risks increase significantly.

To find your personal BMI range, the formula is straightforward: divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For example, a man who is 1.75m tall and weighs 75kg would have a BMI of 75 ÷ (1.75)² = 24.5, which falls comfortably in the healthy range. Use our BMI calculator above to check your own BMI instantly across both metric (kg) and imperial (stone and pounds) measurements.

BMI Limitations and What Else Matters

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has important limitations. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat — a man with significant muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat, which is not a health concern. Age, genetics, and where fat is distributed on the body also matter more than BMI alone. The NHS recommends using BMI alongside waist circumference as a more complete picture: men with a waist measurement over 94cm (37 inches) face increased health risks, while over 102cm (40 inches) indicates high risk, regardless of BMI. Your GP can assess your individual health context and advise whether your weight is appropriate for your specific circumstances, medical history, and fitness level.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's the exact BMI formula for men?

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For example, if you weigh 80kg and are 1.78m tall: 80 ÷ (1.78)² = 25.3. Use the BMI calculator above to skip the maths.

Is a BMI of 25 still healthy for a man?

A BMI of 25 falls into the overweight category (25.0–29.9), not the healthy range. The healthy range ends at 24.9. However, this is still a relatively low-risk zone — health risks increase more significantly above BMI 30.

Can a muscular man have a high BMI but still be healthy?

Yes. BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so a very muscular man with low body fat may have a high BMI. Waist circumference and fitness level are better indicators. Discuss your individual health with your GP.

Does age affect what a normal BMI is for men?

The NHS BMI categories are the same for all adult men regardless of age. However, some research suggests older men may be healthier at slightly higher BMI levels. Your GP can give personalised advice based on your age and health.

What should a man do if his BMI is outside the healthy range?

If your BMI is above 25 or below 18.5, speak to your GP. They can assess your individual health, discuss lifestyle changes like diet and exercise, and refer you to weight management support if appropriate. Even small weight changes can improve health outcomes.
