What Weight Should I Be at 5'9?

At 5'9 (175cm), your healthy weight depends on your BMI rather than a single number. According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9, which means the healthy weight range for your height is approximately 55kg to 74kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs). However, your ideal weight for my height also depends on factors like muscle mass, frame size, and overall health. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal healthy weight range instantly.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Range for 5'9 — By BMI Category

At 5'9 (175cm), here's how different weights fall across NHS BMI categories:

  • Underweight (BMI under 18.5): Below 55kg (8st 10lbs)
  • Healthy weight (BMI 18.5–24.9): 55–74kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs)
  • Overweight (BMI 25.0–29.9): 74–89kg (11st 10lbs to 14st)
  • Obese Class I (BMI 30.0–34.9): 89–109kg (14st to 17st 2lbs)
  • Obese Class II (BMI 35.0–39.9): 109–124kg (17st 2lbs to 19st 6lbs)
  • Severely obese (BMI 40+): 124kg (19st 6lbs) and above

The weight calculator UK uses these NHS thresholds. If you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds — your healthy weight range may start at BMI 18.5–22.9 instead. Factors That Affect Your Ideal Weight

Your ideal weight isn't just about BMI — several individual factors matter. Muscle mass: Athletes or very active people may have a higher healthy weight because muscle weighs more than fat. Frame size: People with larger bone frames naturally weigh more than those with smaller frames at the same height. Age: Muscle naturally decreases with age, so weight expectations may shift over time. Genetics: Your family history influences where your body naturally sits weight-wise. Health conditions: Certain medications or medical conditions affect healthy weight. Rather than focusing on a single target weight, the NHS recommends aiming for a healthy BMI range and monitoring how you feel — energy levels, fitness improvements, and health markers matter more than the number on the scales.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's the exact healthy weight for 5'9?

At 5'9 (175cm), the healthy weight range is approximately 55–74kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs) based on a BMI of 18.5–24.9. However, this is a range, not a single target. Your ideal weight within this range depends on your muscle mass, frame size, and individual health. Use our free BMI calculator to find your personal range.

Is 180 pounds (82kg) overweight at 5'9?

At 5'9, 82kg gives a BMI of approximately 28.6, which falls into the overweight category (25–29.9 BMI). However, if you're very muscular or athletic, this may not reflect your actual health. Your GP can provide personalised guidance based on your overall health profile.

What if I'm of South Asian or Black African heritage?

The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean heritage due to higher cardiovascular risk at lower BMIs. For your height, a healthy range may be 55–63kg (8st 10lbs to 9st 13lbs) based on BMI 18.5–22.9. Discuss this with your GP for personalised advice.

Does healthy weight depend on age?

Yes. As you age, muscle naturally decreases, so your healthy weight may shift. Older adults may benefit from slightly higher weights to preserve muscle mass. Your GP can advise on healthy weight targets specific to your age and health status.

Should I aim for the lower or upper end of the healthy weight range?

This depends on you. If you're naturally smaller-framed, aiming for the lower end (55–63kg) may feel right. If you're larger-framed or muscular, the upper end (68–74kg) may be more appropriate. Focus on health markers like blood pressure, energy levels, and fitness — not just the number on the scales.
