Women's BMI Chart: Understanding Your Healthy Weight Range
A BMI chart for women shows where your weight falls across the NHS health categories — from underweight through to severely obese. Understanding your BMI range is a useful first step in assessing your health, though it's important to know that BMI is a screening tool only and doesn't account for muscle, bone density, or where fat is stored. This guide explains the standard BMI formula, UK thresholds for women, and how to interpret your personal BMI in context.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
NHS BMI Categories and Healthy Weight Ranges for Women
The NHS BMI formula is the same for women and men: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For women, the NHS BMI categories are:
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9: Healthy weight
- 25.0 to 29.9: Overweight
- 30.0 to 34.9: Obese (Class I)
- 35.0 to 39.9: Obese (Class II)
- 40.0 and above: Severely obese (Class III)
For example, a woman who is 5ft 6in (168cm) tall falls into the healthy weight range between roughly 50kg and 67kg (7st 12lbs to 10st 7lbs). Our free BMI calculator above will instantly calculate your personal BMI from your height and weight — no need to do the maths yourself. Individual healthy BMI ranges vary by height, so checking your specific range is always more useful than general guidance.

BMI Limitations and Why Waist Measurement Matters
BMI is a useful screening tool but has important BMI limitations: it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletic women may have a high BMI despite low body fat percentage. It also doesn't account for where fat is stored — waist circumference is equally important for health risk assessment. The NHS recommends that women also measure their waist: over 80cm (31.5in) indicates increased health risk, and over 88cm (34.5in) indicates high risk. If you have concerns about your weight or health, your GP can discuss your personal situation and help you set realistic health goals beyond just a BMI number.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is the healthy BMI range for women?
The NHS defines a healthy BMI for women as 18.5 to 24.9. Your specific healthy weight range in kg or stone depends on your height — use our BMI calculator above to find your personal range instantly.
Is BMI accurate for all women?
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. Women with high muscle mass may have a higher BMI but lower body fat. Waist measurement is an important complementary measure.
What does it mean if my BMI is over 30?
A BMI of 30 or above falls into the obese category according to NHS guidelines, which indicates increased risk of weight-related health conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Your GP can discuss your individual health picture and recommend next steps.
Does age affect healthy BMI for women?
The NHS BMI categories are the same across all adult ages. However, as women age, muscle naturally decreases, so maintaining physical activity becomes more important for health — not just achieving a BMI number.
Where can I find my healthy weight range?
Use the free BMI calculator on this page by entering your height and weight. It will show you your BMI category and your healthy weight range for your height according to NHS guidelines. ```
